She wasn't going to back down though. "Is this the first time you've been out of bed all day?"

"I'm just a little under the weather, that's all." I tried my best to brush off her concerns but the truth was I felt worse with every passing hour.

"You look more than a little under the weather. And you not getting out of bed until mid afternoon? That's a warning sign if ever I saw one." Wyn frowned at me and though her hands weren't literally on her hips, they may as well have been. She was practically tapping her foot in annoyance as well.

Van adjusted in his seat and pulled the lute from his back. If I was being honest the last thing I wanted right now was to listen to music even if he was a talented player. "You said you were a soldier, right?" I nodded. "That means you should have good reflexes?"

"She was one of the best swordsmen in the human kingdom," Wyn said, her face glowing with pride, which made my heart want to burst with affection.

"Then catch this," Van said lightly before I saw his lute flying through the air.

Dread rolled in my stomach as I reached out to grab it, only for my movements to be much too late. The lute landed on the floor and a massive crack sounded as the back split. Regret filled Van's face and I could almost hear him berating himself inside his head.

"I can fix it, don't worry," Wyn soothed as she looked between us.

I leaned over intending to pick up the broken instrument that was laying at my feet. While I was able to grasp it, I couldn't seem to lift it and myself back up. My muscles couldn't have wasted away that quickly, so what was the problem?

"That's all I needed to see," Wyn murmured before going over to the rope I'd pulled earlier and yanking on it. She came back to me and as Van helped me back into a sitting position she picked up his lute and murmured some incantation underher breath that had the wood sealing itself together once more as though the break had never even happened.

Another woman came in this time, clearly having rushed here probably from how Wyn had pulled on the cord. No one seemed to bat an eye though.

"Please summon a healer, Senara isn't well," Wyn's voice was clipped and almost haughty, which I'd never heard from her before.

I pouted as the woman left once more. "Can't you just heal me?"

Wyn shook her head. "If my magic is responsible for this then it won't be able to heal it as well."

"You could try, then you'd know if this was related to the magic work from before, right?" Van suggested as he took his lute and sat back down, holding onto the thing as though it was his child.

"Fine. But don't blame me if I make it worse," Wyn snapped.

I felt the magic stir around her, raising the hairs on the back of my neck. She let a trickle of it wrap around me as she tried to heal me. From what I understood it was barely enough to heal a small cut, let alone whatever was plaguing me. Still I let her do whatever she thought was best. When I felt the smallest fraction of fatigue lift I smiled and nodded encouragingly.

Wyn shook her head though. "It may not be from my work, but whatever is wrong is beyond my abilities to fix."

I frowned. "How do you know?"

"Because it felt like my magic was going through the muck at the bottom of a swamp. I had to fight just to get you that little bit." So she hadn't been holding back on purpose? I had no idea what was going on then.

There was a knock at the door that I knew was the woman from before since she always had a very tentative knock and apparently she seemed to be assigned to me or something. I hadno idea how life as a noble worked, but I appreciated a familiar face.

What I didn’t expect was the healer who followed her inside. It was one of the ones that had been around when I first woke up after Wyn’s experiment. His long golden hair was tied back in a low ponytail, which was something I almost never saw. The only people that wore their hair up were the serving staff, which made sense since it probably got in the way otherwise.

His eyes, which were a stunning light gold color, seemed to take in the situation immediately and he said, “Please lie back in bed.”

The woman was busy getting the food and tea set up on the side table where Van was sitting so I did as the healer asked, while Wyn hovered around me. “I tried to heal her, but it was like there was something around her blocking my magic.”

The healer nodded. “Thank you for the information, now please sit and have some tea,” he said to Wyn, who, surprisingly, obeyed. When he turned to me he asked, “Do you remember me? I’m healer Thalran Sunshadow. I am one of the senior healers here in the capital, so I assure you you’re in good hands.”

“Thank you,” I croaked, feeling the exhaustion weighing me down like a ton of bricks now I was horizontal. I glanced over at Wyn and Van and saw Wyn stuffing a sweet roll into her mouth, which didn’t surprise me. She always liked to eat when she got stressed, which was difficult when we were living on the streets.

Healer Thalran raised his staff. The green stone that sat in the center seemed to glow in the candlelight as he started to chant something in a language I didn’t understand. Another glance at my friends told me that Wyn was drinking all of this in like a fine wine, seeing another mage at work with a magic that wasn’t the same as hers was a special treat to her.

The green glow that emanated from the stone washed over me, before being followed up by a golden glow that camefrom the yellow and gold crystals surrounding the green stone. Warmth flowed through me and I couldn’t help but relax.

A very long blink later and I could hear Healer Thalran talking to Wyn and Van, and when I finally got my eyes to stay open I saw him standing at the foot of the bed looking at my two friends. “There is definitely something wrong, but it’s not physical.”

“What does that mean?” I asked, drawing his attention.
