“She already has her blood,” Caelum was quick to put together. He pulled up in front of the mansion and then looked over theseat. “I don’t know what that means, but has it ever been a good thing for a witch to have everything she wants?”

Kaci and I looked at him, then looked at each other. I think we were all in agreement. It was never a good thing. In fact, it felt like cold water had emptied into the pit of my stomach.

We both were surprised to see that our pack was already at the mansion, never having called them, and they were all jumping off the front porch to meet us.

I opened the car door and Hunter was already there. “We heard about what happened to Rog from Little Mama; supposedly a big shit-show happened at a party,” he informed. “I went to get them. Brought them all back here,” Hunter added.

“How is he?” Caelum asked, his eyes darkening.

“He took a while to come to. He’s a little scrambled, but he’s healing,” Hunter replied.

Caelum looked at me and Kaci, scanning her over with his eyes.

“You talk to the guys,” I suggested. “I’m gonna get the princess here into bed.” I opened the door and pulled my mate into my arms.

Kaci seemed, for once, perfectly happy with my man-handling her out the door. She felt like putty in my arms, happy to snuggle up against me, which was really a first. Maybe she had finally gotten the situation—she was our mate, and as far as we could figure, there was absolutely no fix for it. If we had any luck at all, the bond would give her a soft spot where we were concerned at the very least…

“There’s more I gotta tell you,” she told me. “Something about my blood. They think my blood was activated by the mating, andnow it’s all supercharged. Something like that. I don’t know,” she added dismissively. “Might have all been crazy, but crazy’s been sort of my wheelhouse this week.”

My heart thudded, feeling once again helpless with this information. She didn’t deserve to be in the middle of this; the idea of having Lycan blood without knowing it until all of the sudden was a concept that was disturbing to me. It was hard enough when you grew up around it.

“We’ll ask around about it, sweet cheeks. I don’t want you to worry about it right now, though,” I added as I walked up the mansion’s stairs with her in toe. I moved her to the bedroom she was staying in. “I want you to get some sleep. We’ll come up and join you once the pack gets here and we set up camp.”

It killed me that I couldn’t yet; I was so tired I felt like dropping. With my arms around my mate, I had no doubt in my mind that it was going to be the best sleep of my life.

I dropped her onto the bed and then sat down to pull off her shoes. They were covered in mud and blood and were wet, but she let me do that too, and it was soothing to take care of her.

“What time is it?” she asked, looking around for a clock.

“About four a.m.,” I answered. “We’re keeping vampire hours right now.”

She flopped the upper half of her body up on the mattress. “I gotta call my sister,” she suddenly said.

“Why?” I grunted.

“She’s got the same blood as me, dumbass.”

“Well, so do your parents, right?”

“Nah. My parents adopted us when she was about three months old, and I was a year and a half. She and I are the same thing. If they wanted me, then they might want her, too.”

“Think they know about her?” I asked, really hoping not.

She raised an eyebrow. “Look, the head of their pack was there when we bought the book. He sold me this amulet we used for the ritual. He put this whole thing in place, I guarantee it, and when he did, he saw me with my sister. Trust me, he knows.”

“We’ll get her, then,” I promised. “You go to sleep. I’ll set some guys on it, pronto.” I dropped the shoes by the side of the bed and then reached up to undo her jeans. She seemed for a moment like she was going to stop me, but then she lifted her hips lithely up to me and I tugged them down and off her shapely legs, exposing white cotton panties that looked like they were designed for her sexy body.

Goddamn, did her pussy smell good.

But I didn’t deserve this pussy. She had almost died because apparently I couldn’t even plan three days ahead, even with Caelum’s brain.

“Come here,” I said, dragging her up the bed, folding my body around her, and pressing my mouth up against her neck. “I’m sorry you went through that bullshit. That won’t happen again. Ever. If there’s anything I want to promise you right now, it’s safety.”

“You can’t promise me safety,” she reminded me frankly. “You’re in the middle of a turf war with oversized psychopaths.”

“I can promise you that if they get to you, it’ll be over our dead bodies,” I assured firmly, pressing my fingers against her hip and rubbing across her smooth skin there.

“Somehow that doesn’t make me feel any better. Can’t you just say something like, ‘That’s okay, bae. Everything’s gonna be fine. That shit’s all over’?”
