I would fucking give my heart out of my chest to be able to say that. Even more to believe it. “It’s not. You’re gonna have to put up with us. We’re at war.”

“Have you won wars like this before?” she asked me.

“Hell yes, a few times. My pack might not be the biggest or strongest, but they’re clever and don’t take shit. But we’ve never gone up against packs that are allied with evil witches, and we’ve never even had a vulnerability before.”

“And all I do is make you vulnerable?”

“If they get you, yeah. We’re vulnerable…” I trailed off because it was finally occurring to me that that wasn’t exactly the case. Once a mate was claimed, it tended to make the males… stronger. And of course it did—the male had to protect his family, not just his pack.

I wasn’t going to fucking claim her now, though. I had to talk with Caelum, we had to devise a plan, and we had to both give up on the possibility that we could revoke the matehood if that was the case. Once we claimed her, she’d change, and there was no changing her back. She’d be part of the pack then. We’d have brought out a full-grown wolf that was wild, untamed, and out of control.

“You gotta go to the guys,” she told me, and I could feel her fingers running through my hair. Felt fucking good.

I groaned. “Fuck those guys.”

“C’mon. You’re at war. Either I want dick, or I want sleep,” she grumbled at me.

I found myself laughing at this and nibbled my teeth across her jaw. “Don’t worry, babygirl. I’ll give you plenty of dick when you’re well-rested,” I told her, although my wolf was literally inside of me bouncing with excitement.

I was just beginning to think that I’d made a poor decision by not pulling my cock out of my pants when I heard her gentle snore start up. She was already asleep.

I smirked and gave her a kiss on the cheek as I tried to untangle myself out of her limbs without waking her up.

When I left the room and walked downstairs, it looked like Caelum was up to his neck in bullshit. Everyone was trying to talk to him at the same time.

I made a loud, defining whistle, and all the men in the room cringed. “Fuck!” some of them exclaimed, glaring at me.

“Hey, this isn’t a fucking town meeting, and he ain’t the fucking mayor. He’salpha. Know your place!” I reminded loudly. “First point is we need a pack member to collect our mate’s sister.”

“I’ll do it!” Beau said, putting his hand in the air with enthusiasm.

“Anyone who isnota fuckup? Because this might be fucking important, not just a way to get my dick sucked by my mate.”

“I know her! I got her!” Beau assured, still enthusiastic. He wasn’t even going to wait for permission, apparently; he was already raising up his hand and showing us his keys. “I was just over there; I’ll go right back.”

“What do you mean you were just there?” Caelum asked, his brows furrowing.

Beau slowly turned back to him, looking sheepish. “Nothing, man. Just… you know. Took her out.”

Caelum pinched the bridge of his nose. “I told you that you were on shit duty. You don’t date when you’re on shit duty,” he snapped.

Beau put up his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay. But… I can get her though, right?” he jerked his thumb out the door.

“Yeah. Bring someone with you who’s not a fuckup.” I chose a packmate at random for the honor.

With that chore done, I looked at Caelum. “She shares blood with the sister. She thinks that’s what they’re after.”

“Why would they be after her blood?” Hunter asked, crossing his arms in front of his chest.

“They think she’s in the Silvermane bloodline,” I explained with a sigh. It still seemed a little farfetched.

“The Silvermane bloodline is completely dried up,” Hunter reminded us, as if he was a history major and not a physics nerd.

“Well, that’s one take. There are a lot of packs out there that claim that they’ve been descendants through the centuries. Some that would pop up, but then disappear. The Novia Scotia tribe, for example…” Duke began, who was the head of ourarcheology department and couldn’t seem to say anything about his subject without boring the piss out of me. He made Caelum’s lectures seem like action movies.

Literally anything. If he was ever going to get my attention, I imagine it would have been now.

Caelum put up a hand and shortened the lecture. “And this pack is one of the ones on your side. They think she’s the real article and have gone through lengths to prove it.”
