Samael shrugged. “No idea, but maybe. I’m just saying watch out, and don’t fuck this up.”

I nod. “Do you mind protecting her sister?” I asked, nodding my head back to the kitchen.

He sighed. “Of course not. Wendy will keep pressing for it, and I’m out of energy to say no to her. God knows you don’t need the distraction by havingtwofemale targets. Got enough on your plates.”

“You already seem quite put out by Little Mama. I’d understand if you said no,” I assured him frankly.

He snorted. “Wendy needs taming, but not while there’s a war happening on our home turf. If this all works out for you then…” He sighed and gestured to the door wearily. “Then we’ll have to make some changes ourselves. I grabbed a strap a few days ago to use on her argumentative, disobedient little ass and realized that she’d put a banishment rune on it. Sent me toDis.”

“The one with the hellcats?” I asked, trying to remember my mythology.

“The one. With. The hellcats,” he said. He took a deep breath, rubbing his palm over his neck. “They’re bigger than I remember, too…” He put his glasses back on his face and shook his head. “Anyway, I won’t distract you with my own troubles right now. When this is all over, I’ll take you out for a beer.” That was the optimism I hoped he would find it in himself to have.

I grinned, thinking about how odd it would be seeing him sit down with me and do something so provincial. But if we survived the week, there were going to be a lot of life changes ahead indeed.

I slapped Samael on the back and went back into the kitchen, surprised to see that Kaci was chatting with the guys, and the guys were digging her. They definitely saw the bite marks on her neck; they were fresh and obvious, but they were still smiling with her in the middle of a turf war, so that boded well. Most of them had bonded with her over the last week when they were helping Ry and I out by keeping an eye on her.

I walked over to Beau, who had gotten the little blond in a corner now and was snaking his hand up her shirt, and I strong-armed him in the direction of the table.

“Off.Limits,” I said in his ear, then pushed him forward gruffly.

“Hey!” Macy snapped atme. “I was enjoying that. I’m eighteen!” she reminded sassily.

I took a deep breath and looked over at Kaci, who was grinning at me like she thought I was being sweetly overprotective but would provide me no backup. So I looked over at Wendy for backup.

Wendy smiled one of her gypsy grins, the type that was mostly in her mouth. “Don’t look at me. Da girl want thatgogo, you know?”

I rolled my eyes, but when I looked back at Macy, she was blushing bright pink. I poured myself a cup of coffee. “When can you do the ritual and get her out of here before Beau busts one of his puppy nuts here?” I asked Wendy.

“Hey!” Beau complained from the table.

The witch looked at her cat, who looked at the shadow, who looked at the demon. The demon checked his watch. “Sunset. And we’re going to be fast. Because whatever is coming is coming fast after that; the rogues will be here tonight. They ain’t fucking around.”

“So, are we going to be able to do it in time?” Kaci asked, her brows narrowed with concern.

“There was a lot of non-conclusive information in the tarot today,” Wendy replied, seeming annoyed about it.

The entire room corrected, “Inconclusive.”

Wendy looked irritated at this correction, but continued, “One thing is for sure—tonight’s gonna be excitin’ as sittin’ in the bayou with meat in your pants during gator season. Better getyourselves ready. Sun goes down, they do their ritual, we do ours, and ya’ll are gonna see who stands.”

CHAPTER 30

Kaci

It fucking hurt to walk.

Not just a little bit, either.

Like the kind of sore that I felt with every step in the most tender of places.

Even though I’d showered, I still felt dribbles of their seed dripping out of me, and that should have been gross, but a part of me was comforted by the feel of them between my thighs. And maybe a little tiny part of me actually liked how that felt.

I didn’t want to face that part.

I ignored that partwillfullylike it was some sort of spaghetti monster from another dimension.

It wasn’t real, right?
