“He better fucking be, because if he’s still here, Ford will have to defend me for murder.”

“Don’t say that.”

“I mean it.”

“Go make sure that animal is gone,” I say.

“No. I’m not leaving you alone.” Emery takes out his phone and orders his security team to call the police. “I’m guessing he’s on his way to the airport.”

“He locked the door.” I don’t know much about assaults, or if this even counts.

“Locking you up is unlawful imprisonment.”

“He knew about the auction,” I say softly. “Said such nasty things and shoved me, but he didn’t touch me.”

Emery’s face falls. “He thought he could do this to you becauseIbought you at the auction?”

Holding myself, I nod.

“I’m going to have him arrested before he hops on his private jet.”

“Don’t you need him?”

“Do you think I’d work with a man who tried to hurt you? I don’t need anything for my business that badly. You...” He hugs me tighter. “You and Jess come first.”

“Thank you.” My heart squeezes, and I feel sick Ican’t say the same.

“Nothing to thank me for.” Holding me under his arm, Emery walks me to his office.

His other assistant, Sloane, is back and gapes at me in shock.

“What happened, Bernadette?” She’s been so nice to me.

“I’m fine,” I say, although Emery just removed me from the men’s room.

“One of my foreign associates assaulted her,” Emery says because he’s not one to hide the truth. “I’m taking her home.”

We get into his office, where Lars’ partner stands there staring at his phone.

He holds up his hands, probably after reading a text from Lars that he took off.

“I had nothing to do with what Lars did.”

“Get the fuck out of here.” Emery holds the office door open. “The deal is off.”

Nodding, the other man whisks his jacket off Emery’s guest chair and leaves.

Emery sits me on his couch and feeds me water with electrolytes. After kissing me on the forehead, he comes back with my coat and my bag. He bundles me up and again under his arm, walks me to the elevator.

“Cancel that marketing meeting, Sloane.”

“Yes, sir. Feel better, Bernadette.”

“Thank you.”

In the elevator, Emery pushes a hand through his hair.

“This wasn’t your fault, Emery.” I worry he’ll pull away from me.
