“He won’t take it back from you.”

“Then I’ll give it away.”

“To who?” He stands up.

“The Guide Dog Institute, maybe. Donors get to name the puppies.”

He laughs and holds me against his chest. “Do you want a dog?”

“It depends on where I live.”

“Ash’s townhouse has a yard.”

“We’ll figure it out.”

“Whatever you want, sugar.” Kissing my forehead, he whispers, “Whatever you want. I’m yours.”

For the first time in weeks, I’m not suffocating with worry. I’m drawing again, and with Michael getting his case dismissed, he’ll give me back my designs like he promised.

Ford’s phone rings, and he answers it.

“Yeah, Caroline? What?” He stops and pinches his eyebrows, listening to his assistant. “Thanks, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“What is it?” I tug on his leather jacket.

“The hearing to dismiss the case has been moved up to tomorrow.”

FORTY-THREE

FORD

“Ford Montgomery for the defense, your honor,” I say in the noisy courtroom from so many cases waiting to be heard.

Kinsey came in looking wrecked but wore a smile for some stupid fucking reason. He’s about to be buried alive, he might want to keep his mouth closed.

“Pratt Sterling for the state, your honor.”

God, I hate him. I hate seeing him through Ashton’s eyes, seeing how good-looking he is. Especially after what we shared this weekend. How we opened up to each other. Got a lot off our chests and minds.

I admit, Ash leaving hurt me. I never thought something could wound me that deeply. It had me questioning everything about myself. My strength, my power.

It walked a tightrope until Bernadette broke me out of the numb hold life had on me.

Now I want her and Ashton. Forever.

Even if Emery comes with that package.

But that works out. I’ll want time alone with Ashton and don’t want to leave Bernadette out.

“Be seated,” the judge says, knocking me out of my thoughts. “The state called this hearing.”

I tilt my head toward Sterling.Ifiled a motion asking for a hearing first.

Pratt’s face is taut as he pushes papers around, filings that I recognize.

No.

I pull Kinsey in by the crappy jumpsuit.
