“Right. Poor you. Who have you slept with so far?” Her giddiness comforts me.

I shouldn’t be taking any of this seriously.

“No one,” I scoff. “I didkissthe billionaire.”

“And?”

“He kisses just like you would think a hot billionaire kisses.”

“Can you be more specific?”

“I felt warm all over. And... I got kind of, you know, damp.”

“Just don’t say moist. You know how I hate that word.”

“You and a lot of other people.” I personally don’t get the aversion.

I fill her in on dress shopping with Ash and meeting Victoria.

“Oh my God, so are you staying in New York?”

It’s heartwarming how so many people want me to stay. I moved here to start a new career. Just to see if I had what it takes.

If I can make it there, and all...

I wonder if I’m using Stella as a safety net. Should I have tried to show my designs to a NewYork fashion house first instead of only considering her? One mention to Victoria and she wanted them.

Maybe she sees something in me I haven’t.

“I’m not sure if I’m staying,” I say, stunned to hear the thought voiced out loud. “I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up.”

“Maverick wants you to stay.”

“That’s not fair.” I sip my coffee. “Oh, and I moved out of the motel.”

“To one here in Manhattan?”

“God, no. I can’t afford that. Ford’s letting me stay with him.”

“The hot-as-fuck lawyer?”

“They’re all hot.” My eyes flutter, picturing the guys lined up in a photoshoot. “I’m wondering if I got kicked in the head. How can all these hot guys want me?”

“Because you’re amazing. You’re gorgeous. You have spirit. That and you’re a little down on your luck. Real men love to rescue a damsel.”

“I wanted to rescue myself, but I got cornered.”

“Shoot, Bernie. Mav is getting anxious. Let me go. Will you be stopping by soon?”

“Probably tomorrow.” I’d told her my new schedule with Emery working as his assistant.

I finish my coffee and walk off the bear claw I ate. Hoofing it all the way up Fifth Avenue probably burned off the pastry as well as lunch.

Lost in my thoughts, I turn into Ford’s building, only to have a brawny hand knock the wind out of me.

“Where are you going, miss?” A doorman I don’t recognize physically stops me.

Stunned at the harsh arm across my chest, I say, “Where’s Ted?”
