“Off today.” He looks me up and down with a scowl then folds his arms. “How doyouknow Ted?”

“I’m staying with Ford Montgomery.” Reaching for my phone, I call him, but it goes right to voicemail.

He’s with Michael, shit. I follow up with a text that returns as ‘failed.’

“Nope.” This doorman snaps at me. “Try again. I’m new here, but I’ve seen Mr. Montgomery. No way would he have anything to do with a big girl like you.” He glares at me, his eyes filled with bitter judgment.

I stumble back, my heart shrinking inside my coat. “I’ll... I’ll just wait for Mr. Montgomery.”

A chill sweeps down the street as the sun sets over the park in front of me.

“Don’t be begging any of my other tenants, you little scam artist.” He points. “Get out of here.”

I exhale and wander down the block, tears stinging my eyes.

I try calling Ford again. Nothing.

Ash is with his patients.

Emery is with his daughter.

Ford is with my ex.

Zara is with an anxious Labrador.

Stella is three thousand miles away.

All my clothes and everything else I own are in an apartment I can’t get into. Again!

Just great...

Only in a New York minute can a warm welcome turn into an ice-cold bucket of piss splashed across your ankles.

FOURTEEN

FORD

On the Uber Black ride up to my place, I’m thinking of a woman to call who will go several rounds with me tonight.

My cock is pulsing for relief. I can’t and won’t touch Bernadette when I’m so raw like this.

As the Uber pulls up to the front of my building, I see her leaning against the brick, her head in her hands.

I jump out and rush up to her. “Bernadette, what’s wrong?”

Michael better not have called her again.

“They won’t let me inside.” She lifts her head, and dark streaks of mascara track down from her red-rimmed eyes. “He said...” She gulps down a laugh with scorching red cheeks as she repeats word for ugly word what one of my doormen said to her.

“Whofuckingsaid that to you?” My teeth grind together, fury choking me.

“Him.” She lifts a finger to point.

I turn around, and a doorman I don’t recognize pales as he stumbles back inside.

“Get over here, you prick.” I take Bernadette gently by the arm and steer her into my lobby.

I won’t make a scene outside. I live on fucking Fifth Avenue.
