"And you admit you need to go home?" he shot back. "This ain't a sport for fragile little girls. This ain't some cooking show, baby. There's only two things any of us want from you. A sandwich or a blowjob. So pick which kinda girl you're going to be and get the fuck out of our way!"

"You fucking piece of..." I stormed forward and was swinging before my brain even had a plan.

My fist caught him across the jaw. Austin twisted with the impact, his face dropping down almost to his knees. Spit flew from his mouth. A grunt fell out, filling the sudden silence of the room, but the man made no effort to swing back.

Instead, he laughed, standing back up to smirk at me as if he'd just won that round. "Dumb move, girl. Real dumb, because no matter what..." He leaned into my face. "I don't hit women."

So I pointed at my neck. "No? What's this? Oh right, that was last weekend, with no one around to know what kind of a chickenshit you are. So you'll only hit women you think are weaker than you? Is this new chivalry because you realized I'm not about to break?"

"You'll break," he snapped. "See, that's the thing. Sooner or later, you are going to break. Women just aren't strong enough to do this, and when the wreck happens, don't go crying about it, because we tried to tell you. We have warned you over and over, and you know what? Every time we try to take care of you, you do shit like this? You think hitting me is going to make you a man, Cody?" He scoffed.

I just lifted my chin. "You fucking greased my rope. Three times now, you have tried to make sure I get hurt. You think that makes you look like what, some kind of hero?" I tossed up my hands and turned around, right into a camera filming us. "I'm not quitting," I told the lens. "I'm not going anywhere, and I'm not going to break."

Then I pointed to the sleeve of my shirt where it said "Girls Do It," and walked out of the room. If they wanted a little drama, then I'd make drama. After all, it had worked to make J.D. a household name, hadn't it?

Chapter34

That woman wasall over the fucking place. I made it into the locker room just as she swung, nearly dropping Austin Chambers with a single hit. Yeah, I bet that fucker was real glad he'd decided to pick a fight with her.

Then I saw the camera.

Cody didn't, but I'd be damned if she didn't have the media savvy of a veteran rider. Pushing into Austin's face, she said her piece and made it clear that none of this was because Austin was a gentleman. Maybe most people didn't know how dangerous a greased rope would be, but Cody laid it out real simple. He was trying to hurt her. He was willing to hurt her. He just was too much of a pussy to admit it in public.

She called his ass out, standing there, giving him the chance to hit back. She didn't run; she didn't tremble. She challenged him the same way one of us would, and she looked like a force of nature as she did it.

Her black and pink stood out in the room. Her long blonde braid set her apart. The fact that Austin was a good four inches taller than her made her look tiny, but the set of her shoulders made her look tough. Like this, there was no doubt Cody could keep up with everyone else in the room.

And when she turned, almost walking into the camera? She just pointed at her arm and gave the fans a very good show. Well, at least I didn't have to worry about the media relations part of this, but the rest of it?

She was going to give me a migraine before the weekend was over.

"Cody!" I snapped, catching her arm when she tried to blow past me again.

She turned, braced up like she was ready to throw down. "What?!"

"Breathe," I told her, pulling her against my side but refusing to let go of her arm. "Seriously, woman. Take a damned breath, calm your ass down, and get your head in the game!"

She yanked her arm away from me. "It is."

All I could do was huff out a laugh. "Fuck, but you really are his rookie."

That made her stop. "What?"

"J.D.," I clarified. "You're just like him some days. You see a problem and start doing before you start thinking. Well, just so you know, that's going to bite you in the ass."

"Don't care," she grumbled.

I murmured under my breath, but she was moving again, so I followed. "So what's your plan then?"

"What?"

"Your plan," I said again.

She didn't stop until she was back at her gear, and then it was only to pull on her glove and pull out her rosin. "I'm going to make this sticky. I'm going to warm up. When it's my turn, I'm going to ride a bull."

"And when they score you low again?" I pressed.

She yanked her hand down the black rope with a vengeance. "Then I'm going to scream at the judges. What else can I do, Jake? They don't want me here. They aren't going to make it easy. That means my one and only option is to make sure I keep coming back, keep riding the bulls, and keep getting my face in those cameras until they can't ignore me anymore."
