“I remember…I remember the full physical I gave you the night before you went in for it,” Colleen said and Avery smiled his eyes darkening with desire.

“In it…since they were doing everything else and I’d just turned thirty-six the doctor decided to do a complete workup.”

“What does this have to do with you leaving me for someone else? Unless you’re telling me it was the doctor or nurse…”

“No, baby, just listen,” he said reaching out to slip a piece of her hair back behind her ear. He couldn’t stop touching the silky softness of it and rubbed it between his fingers until she shifted away from him a bit. “One of the things they checked was fertility…the doctor ran it three times before I had to accept he was right.”

“What?” Colleen said her breath sticking in her chest.

“I found out I couldn’t give you babies…the ones you wanted and deserved to have…and I went off the ledge a bit.”

“And cheated on me?” she asked knowing that meant Tommy couldn’t possibly be his.

“No, if you never believe anything I tell you ever again, believe this,” he said sliding his hand behind her head to bring her gaze up to his. “I never slept with another woman, not while we were married, and not since. You are my one and only baby and I have missed you every minute of every day.”

“No…” she cried getting up to walk away from him. “You wouldn’t have sent me away from you just because…”

“I suddenly found out I wasn’t the man I thought—my pride, my masculinity was suddenly shredded and the idea of telling you that we couldn’t have a child…I couldn’t do that Colleen. I wanted to save myself from your pity and let you have what you wanted—a baby, a real family…”

“And you think the only way to be a father is by creating a baby yourself?” Colleen heard the pain and saw the truth in his eyes and it made it worse, every bit of it.

“No…not anymore at least,” he said lifting his hand to touch her cheek. “I don’t care about anything but having you anymore. I’ll do anything to give you a family baby. Adoption…donor sperm…it doesn’t matter as long as I have you.”

“No.” Colleen shook her head moving away to stop the pain from overtaking her.

“Colleen baby, please.” Avery stopped her, sliding his arm tightly around her as he brushed away her tears. “I love you. I have never stopped loving you. Please don’t walk away from me. I know I don’t deserve to have you but I can’t let you go again.”

“You have no idea what you put in motion Avery. You have no idea what’s happened to me since then…”

“I know some,” he stated lowering his face down to kiss her gently. “I know what happened in Philly now…why you really left town and I know I don’t deserve you to ever forgive me for what happened to you but I will live my every breath trying to make it up to you. I know about Thomas…I know about Meredith and you but do you burn in her arms the way you do in mine?”

“You what?” she asked as her heart slammed to a stop inside her chest.

“I know about your son and I will love him if you let me. I will protect you both if you’ll let me. Let me make you both mine. We can figure out how to give him a brother or sister…or if you don’t want another baby that’s fine. If you want to focus on the bakery, I will make sure you have every possible support I can give you. I will climb any wall you put in front of me baby. I will jump through any hoop you need. Just please don’t run away from this. I know you felt it in the kiss earlier and I know you feel it now,” Avery said before covering her lips with his until she was clinging to his neck.

Deep inside her, memory took over her body and she pressed her hips into his, gasping into his mouth when he lifted her, wrapping her legs around his waist as he pulled the band out of her hair and pushed his hand into it. Nothing mattered except his hands on her body and he walked her through the penthouse to the bedroom, laying her down on the bed as he discarded his shirt.

“You are so beautiful baby, so perfect, always have been,” he said his voice gravelly with his desire.

“Is this…” Colleen touched the quilt on the bed as she looked at the headboard.

“Our bed, the only place I could sleep because it still held you.” He watched as her eyes fluttered shut as her breathing deepened.

“Avery…”

“I love you Colleen, and I will prove that you can trust me with your heart again. I will never betray it I promise,” he said holding himself rigid above her.

“Show me…love me,” she begged pulling his head down to hers, their breath mingling as his hands worked to discard their clothes.

He’d barely let his hands explore her soft folds before she was clutching at his back in orgasm. “God baby…I need you.”

“Yes,” she cried softly against his mouth as he slid into her body. She felt every tiny movement he made and shocked herself as she gave into every need and let him send the bliss through her.

She shook and shuddered as the final climax sent them both over and he rolled them until she was resting on top of his body, cradling her the way he always did after making love to her. “Avery…”

“Shh, I’ve got you, baby,” he said soothing her to sleep.

He woke around two, to her body pressed against his and lowered his face down to her hair, letting her scent envelope him completely. He couldn’t resist from kissing her and started at her temple, working his way down to her mouth, mostly waking her. Her hands reached for him and he was lost, sliding into her body as she returned each kiss just as possessively.
