Eww. They’re kissing. I’m gonna hurl.
Damien:
That’s enough for me. Brodie and I are out.
I save the pic Brodie sent to my phone, then study it. You can see both our profiles as she looks up at me, and we are smiling at each other. I trace her face with my finger, then let out a sigh. She’s only here for a few days, but I’m gonna make the most of it. I feel like I’ve known her for so long, how is it possible that we just met yesterday?
She’s beautiful, no doubt. But it was more than that. I felt a connection from the moment I first laid eyes on her. There’s no way to explain it. I just knew something about her was different.
I’ve never given dating or being in a relationship much thought lately. After college I moved back home and have been working remotely for a design firm out of Denver. I travel there about once a month, but for the most part I work from home. Not much of an opportunity to meet anyone living like that. And most women that I meet in town don’t hold my interest. So I kinda gave up the idea of dating.
My cabin may be remote but I’ve got satellite internet that keeps me connected. And truth be told, I get paid way too much for what I do. I’m free by the early afternoon most days, which gives me plenty of time to hike, work the land, chop wood, and do all the other thingsthat help me feel connected to where I grew up. I stay busy, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I never plan on leaving.
That never bothered me before, but now that I’ve met someone like Marley, how can I expect her to give up life in the big city for a small cabin in the mountains?
And since she’s from a big city, I imagine she’s used to going out to really nice places.That’s it!I’ll make a reservation at the fancy restaurant at the new resort in town. I’m sure that’s more her speed.
Chapter 5
Marley
I’ve spent a fun day with my sister learning all about the ranch and what Maddie does for it. And Nash is so entertaining. I enjoyed meeting both him and Rhett at the barn while they worked some horses.
And when I met Colton’s sister Elise she beamed at me and gave me a huge hug. If I had to guess I’d say she already found out about my date with her brother. But how? Oh, of course! Damien and Brodie’s handsome but mischievous smiles come to mind. Of course they told her. I wonder if there’s anyone in town theydidn’ttell.
As much as I’m enjoying myself with Maddie, I can’t help but check my phone every so often wondering if Colton will text. Surely he didn’t forget our plans? Or did he? Was he just being nice since Maddie practically forced him to take me out? No, that’s not it. There’s no way he’d kiss me like that if he wasn’t into me.Right?
I’m starting to doubt myself when his number flashes on my screen. My heart skips a beat as I open the message.
Colton:
Hey Marley, how’s your day going? You getting the full tour of the ranch and Heart River?
Me:
The Ranch, yes. We are about to head to town so I can see it in the daylight. And I met Elise!
Colton:
So, about my sister…
Me:
Yes?
Colton:
My dumbass brothers sent a group text to my siblings about our date last night.
Me:
Ha! I wondered if she already knew. She was extra nice to me.
