Scott looks between both of us a few times before his face darkens and he takes a few steps forward. He stops when Sam pushes off the wall and stands at his full height, which is more than a foot taller than Scott.

“I should have known something was going on between you two. What, are you giving him all the goods while stringing me along and giving me nothing?” Scott grits out through clenched teeth while glaring at me, whereas I’m seriously trying to understand where the hell that train of thought came from. Sam is gay and has only just recently told me that he might be bi, but there’s no way I’m telling Scott that. Shaking my head, I point to the door.

“Not that it’s any of your business anymore, but Sam and I are friends. Have been for a few years now. I am capable of having male friends and not fucking them. Now, as I said before, get out of my apartment before I call the police.”

As soon as Sam hears that last part again, and since Scott hasn’t budged, he pulls out his phone. A few seconds later, I hear the telltale voice saying “9-1-1 what is your emergency?”

With another glare my way, Scott moves toward the door. “This isn’t over, bitch,” he calls over his shoulder.

I move to step out in the hall, but Sam gestures for me to stay put and steps out himself to make sure he leaves.

In the kitchen, I grab us both a beer as I try to shake off my nerves. I vaguely hear Sam filling the operator in on what happened and heard her say it has been logged in case something happens again.

Sam stayed with me for a while to make sure I was okay and while I called Sasha to let her know what had happened. It was difficult, but I finally got Sasha to agree not to head out tonight after pointing out that she wouldn’t get here about till about 3 am. Though I’m pretty sure she would have left tonight if Sam hadn’t been here, but his last final is also my last final.

After we hang up, Sam wanted to stay longer, but I was crashing hard. After making me promise to call him if anything else happens, he headed back to his apartment. He knew I really didn’t have any backup right now since Sasha, her brother, and our two other friends, Ethan and Travis, had already moved back home a couple days ago since he helped take boxes down to the trucks. The five of us lucked out at getting apartments in the same complex. Shortly after moving in, we met Sam, and he was welcomed into the fold.

Sighing, I finished my beer, and after verifying everything was locked up; I made my way to my bedroom. The sooner I got away from here, the better. Then I won’t have to see Scott again.

With a deep breath, I push thoughts of Scott from my mind and focus on the positives. I’m excited to see my dad and uncle again. I hadn’t seen them since spring break a few months back, but that was only for a few days since one of my teachers decided to be a prick and gave us a huge business analysis project that was due the Tuesday after we got back from break. Asshole.

Twenty minutes later, I slid into my SUV, cause yeah, I took a leisurely last stroll through campus on my way out for the last time. I was about to hook up my tunes when a text from my bestie/sister, Sasha, had me perking up.

Hey,girl! We’re about fifteen minutes out. Can’t wait to see you!! :)

Even though we had talked last night, I was totally going to ignore the little happy dance I did in my driver’s seat when I saw her message. Gosh, I’m such a dork sometimes but I miss my bestie.

Can’t wait to see you either, girl! In my car now and heading to the apartment. See you soon :)

I can’t wait to see Sasha, her twin brother Alexei, Travis, and Ethan again. All four of them finished their finals a few days ago, so they already moved back home. Sam wouldn’t be moving out of his apartment until tomorrow when his brothers come to help him move back home to Minnesota, otherwise, we’d help him load up his truck. Out of the six of us, Sam and I were the only ones that were unlucky enough to have their last final start on Friday-frickin-afternoon at 4-frickin-pm.

Yay us, I thought as I rolled my eyes.

As I drove toward my apartment, I tried to focus my fried out, but excited, brain on what all I had to do yet.

Pack my everyday essentials that I had purposefully left out.

Pack up my remaining things in the living room and kitchen.

Do a final wipe-down of the surfaces in the apartment.

Turn in the keys to my landlord.

On the bright side, at least the bulk of my belongings are already packed. I’d already filled the holes where I had pictures and shelves hanging on the walls, so at least that tedious chore was done.

Ten minutes later, I pull into the apartment parking lot and as I’m putting my SUV in park, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, washing away my excitement like a bucket of ice water. My fingers itch to grab a weapon.

I know how to shoot and throw knives with deadly precision. Plus, my dad, grandpa, and uncle had made sure I knew how to defend myself since I was a little girl. As I got older, they also taught me how to shoot. But throwing knives, that was all my grandpa.

My guts in a knot and, on a lark, I send off a coded text to Sasha and Alexei.

????! I forgot what time we’re supposed to meet. Was it six o’clock?

Translation: Major bad vibe and I only have six knives on me.

Russians sometimes use????(which literally means pancakes) much like we use the word ‘bugger!’ when we’re in a situation where cussing isn’t appropriate. Both Sasha and Alexei frequently use the term. However, I’m a person who will always tell it as it is and never give a shit about where I am when I say it. And both Sasha and Alexei knew that. That’s why we chose????as my code word when I felt like something was wrong or off. Something that was making me feel like I needed backup. ASAP.

The one time I ignored this feeling, things went bad. Epic proportions bad. Ever since then, I’ve always trusted this feeling, and it hasn’t proven me wrong.
