My inexperience shows, even though I trained whenever I could. Reaper wins two of the three rounds with a total score of 63—51.

Giving him another fist bump, I jog down the steps and stalk toward Sunshine.

Even though I’m bummed Timber didn’t win, I still cheer my heart out for him.

“Good job, Uncle Timber,” Jordan shouts and Sadie cheers next to him, both of them sitting on my lap.

After fist bumping Reaper, Timber jogs down the stairs and stalks toward me. A pool of desire curls in my belly at the heated look he’s giving me. I’m vaguely aware of Jordan and Sadie sliding off my lap and going over to Susie. I shift nervously in my seat, but I can’t tear my gaze from him.

When he reaches me, he picks me up as though I weigh no more than a small child and sets me down on his lap so that my shoulder is to his chest. His rough hand pushes my chin up and his lips claim mine.

As our lips connect, I sink into his arms and as he holds me, the world falls away. All my worries about my dad... I mean Smoke, fade away. About Bruce. About Preston. About X, Preston’s dealer. For a moment, I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be. In Timber’s arms. Safe, protected, and cared for. It’s too soon to be love, but it’s not far off. I’m already half gone for him.

Whistles and cheers break me from my thoughts, and I feel my cheeks heating as Timber’s chest shakes with laughter. His rough thumbs caress my cheeks and it’s only then that I realize I had been crying.

“You okay, Sunshine? I didn’t push too much too fast?” His voice is tight with worry and as I open my eyes to look up at him, his worry shows even more with the tightness around his pale blue eyes.

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I nod. “They’re happy tears, L—I mean, Timber.”

His face immediately lights up with his smile. He leans forward and kisses my forehead. Thankfully, he doesn’t say anything about my near slip up with his name.

“You were amazing up there. It must have taken a lot of practice.”

He nods, his gaze going back to the competition. “I trained a lot with Levi, Lex or Alexei as you may hear him called, and Sasha. It’s also a lot of fun and another way to blow off steam. Even though the others aren’t competing, almost all of my brothers have taken to it.”

Timber pulls me closer, tucking my head under his chin as we watch Levi and Razor finish their rounds.

Not surprisingly, Levi wins. I still can’t believe how her knives sink into the wood of the targets so much. They went deeper than any of the others’ knives. Each time she retrieved them, it seemed like she actually has to work to get them out of the wood.

In the last round, Alexei tromps Beast, much like Levi did in the previous round. It’s obvious that Levi, Sasha, and Alexei are even more skilled than I realized. Almost every time they hit the bullseye, or if they missed, it was by a hair.

“Quiet down,” Thor bellows out. After a few moments, he nods and then gestures to the board where Smithy has just finished rearranging the names for the order they’ll go in.
