"There is also the issue of fatigue." Amanda looked at Syssi. "We know that your prophetic ability diminishes with every try."

"That's true, but when I tossed a coin with Mia next to me, my accuracy didn't drop with each subsequent toss. I guessed every single one correctly no matter how many times I repeated it."

Mia nodded. "That's how Syssi discovered my enhancing powers."

Kian let out a resigned breath. "I see that I'm overruled." He pushed to his feet and positioned himself behind Syssi. "Go ahead. I'm right here to catch you if you fall."

Syssi

Syssi had been sure that Kian would balk at the last moment, but she should have known that her husband would be true to his word.

She turned to Mia. "I wonder if touching you and the amulet at the same time would produce a stronger vision? Are you up for it?"

Mia shrugged. "I don't even know what I'm doing when I'm enhancing someone's power, but I know that I'm not going to see what you see, so yeah."

Toven looked worried. "I'm not sure about that."

"Why not?" Mia arched a brow. "It's not like I'm being taken into enemy territory, strapped to your back."

He winced. "That's different. I knew that I could protect you there. I can't protect you from the influence of this artifact or what it might reveal to Syssi."

"I'll be fine." She patted his arm before turning her chair around and driving over to where Syssi was standing. "Do you want to hold my hand?"

"Yes. Thank you." Syssi clasped Mia's small hand in hers and hovered the other one over the amulet, when it occurred to her that it wasn't safe for the girl.

The previous vision happened so fast that it had knocked her off her feet and she fell, but Kian had caught her. If Mia was in the way, she might get knocked over.

"Perhaps you should move a little to the side." She looked over her shoulder at Kian. "I trust you to catch me if I fall so I don't topple Mia."

"Of course." He put both of his hands on her shoulders. "Perhaps you can summon the vision while sitting on my lap. That way, you're not going to fall for sure."

She was seriously tempted to take him up on his offer, and the only reason she dismissed the idea was that she didn't want to add even more variables to her attempt.

"It's okay."

Taking a deep breath, Syssi put her hand on the amulet, but unlike the other time, nothing happened.

Baffled, she opened her eyes and frowned at the artifact. "It's not working. Maybe we've exhausted its power."

"Try to concentrate on your question," Jacki said. "Maybe it's weakened, and you need to pull it out of it."

Closing her eyes again, Syssi imagined the scene she'd witnessed before, with the two Doomers and four cartel thugs discussingthe murder of innocents, and as the familiar swirl of an incoming vision started spinning in front of her, she surrendered to the sensation and let it pull her through the vortex.

Except, the scene she found herself in couldn't be farther from what she'd expected.

She was in the temple she had seen before, but this time both of the goddesses were there, the one with the silver hair and the seer, both glowing so brightly that it was impossible to discern their facial features.

Next to them, sitting on a cushion on the floor a few feet behind the seer, was a dark-haired goddess who didn't glow at all, and her face looked very familiar.

She was the feminine version of Aru, and she was using what looked like an old-fashioned quill to write in a large journal while the goddesses talked.

As the seer laughed at something the other one had said, the silver-haired goddess laughed too, and the two embraced.

They were obviously friends, and Syssi knew who they were. She also knew who the scribe was, and the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.

Did Kian know? And if he did, why hadn't he told her?

Also, why was she being shown this scene instead of what she'd asked for?
