As the vision started fading and the vortex spat her out on the other side, she gasped, opened her eyes, and turned to look at Kian, who was holding her against his chest.

"That was short," he said. "What did you see?"

"Not what I set out to see." She pushed away from him and sank into her chair. "I think that the amulet is out of power."

"What about me?" Mia asked. "Did I help in any way?"

"Yes." Syssi smiled at her. "I think that I got the vision thanks to you, not the amulet. It was about the goddesses, not the Doomers or the cartel thugs."

Kian looked relieved more than disappointed, when he handed her a glass of water. "What was the vision about?"

She couldn't tell him in front of everyone, and she had a feeling that he already knew about Aru's connection to the seer and the queen but had chosen for some reason not to tell her.

"Oh, nothing." She waved a dismissive hand. "Before, I saw each of the goddesses separately, and now I saw them together in the temple, acting like the best of friends."

A sidelong glance at Annani proved her suspicion that her mother-in-law was in on the secret as well.

Syssi really didn't appreciate being kept in the dark like that.

"Perhaps I should give the amulet a try," Jacki said. "We need to know whether it's really out of power."

"Go ahead." Syssi waved a hand over the artifact.

"Wait." Kalugal hauled Jacki into his lap. "Now you can touch it."

Smiling, she kissed his cheek before turning back to the amulet.

Everyone held their breath as she lifted it by its chain and closed the palm of her other hand around it.

A long moment passed before Jacki opened her eyes and shook her head. "It's dead. There is no juice left in it." She turned to Kian. "I guess all we have left is our wits."

He grimaced. "What else is new?" He looked at the inert artifact. "So, what do we do with this thing now? Do you want to throw it in the ocean?"

Jacki looked at it for a moment before shaking her head and turning to Kalugal. "Add it to your collection of well-guarded treasures."

"What else is in there?" Kian asked.

Kalugal turned to look at him. "Mostly items that I'm still working on deciphering and a few things that were removed from sites without permission. Nothing in that collection would interest you."

Kian looked doubtful, but he didn't push the issue. "Would you like another cup of coffee?" he asked Syssi as he sat down.

"I would love a cup." Syssi smiled at Oridu, who rushed over with a fresh carafe. "Thank you."

She couldn't confront Kian in front of everyone about what she'd seen in her vision, but once the others left, she intended to bring it up with him and his mother.

Dagor

"Ishould call Margo." Frankie pulled the phone out of her pocket. "Can you get us another round of drinks?"

Dagor smiled. "No more Bloody Marys for you. Water or coke, what do you prefer?"

"Coke and more peanuts, please."

"Yes, ma'am." He leaned to kiss her pouty lips. "I think being a beta tester for Perfect Match is a waste of your natural talents. You should be a negotiator."

In less than an hour, Frankie had mapped out their two possible futures, one if she remained human and the other if she turned immortal, and had successfully tackled and solved all of his objections.

She chuckled. "Right. You are easy to negotiate with because you love me. My talents didn't work on my former bosses."
