"We don't know that." Dagor pulled her into his arms. "Maybe it's about something completely different. Wait until we find out what it's about. It might be something as simple as someone who has been accidentally left behind. I don't remember anyone taking a tally of who was on board before leaving the port."

She raised her eyes to him. "Will you let me know as soon as you do?"

"I'll send you a message. But in the meantime, don't freak out. Whatever it is, we can handle it. We have a ship full of highly trained Guardians and gods. No one stands a chance against us, not even if the entire cartel comes after us."

Frankie

Frankie watched Dagor and William walk out through the sliding glass door of the Lido deck and turned to William's mate. "What do you think is going on?"

Kaia had been the first to acknowledge that an emergency meeting meant trouble, but she didn't look concerned, which was reassuring.

"It probably has something to do with the cartel, but your boyfriend is right. You have nothing to worry about other than your friend not getting picked up from Cabo on schedule. You should call her and tell her that we will be at least two days late."

"Two days?" Frankie squeaked. "Margo is going to be so peeved."

That was putting it mildly. Margo was not quick to anger, but when she was pushed too far, it was better not to be anywhere near her.

"Yeah." Kaia gulped her drink before putting it down on the side table. "We left Acapulco yesterday evening, and we were sailing through the night. It will take at least until nightfall to get back unless it's urgent and the captain increases the speed. If he does,we can get there this afternoon, but that's still only a few hours saved. I don't know how long it will take them to solve whatever problem they encountered, but it will take at least half a day, and then we need to cover this distance again."

"You're right. It's gonna be at least a two-day delay, if not longer."

Kaia smiled. "I hope your friend is having fun in Cabo."

Frankie hoped so, too. Margo had sounded more upbeat the last time they had spoken, so maybe things were going well, and since the bachelorette party was supposed to last a week, she wouldn’t have to wait alone the entire two days, just the last one.

That meant that Margo would have to book another night in the hotel, and that might be a problem. What if it was fully booked?

What if it was too expensive?

Lynda had paid for the flights and the rooms, and since it was an all-inclusive resort, they could eat and drink as much as they wanted as long as they didn't order premium alcohol.

"I need another drink." Frankie glanced at Bob before shifting her eyes to Kaia and the empty glass on the side table. "Can I get you something?"

"No, thank you." Kaia took out a pair of sunglasses from her tote and put them on. "I'm going to take a little nap. I don't need as much sleep as I did before the transition, but I still need more than William, and he kept me awake until sunrise this morning." A smile tugged on Kaia's lips. "Not that I'm complaining."

Frankie didn't know that the girl used to be a Dormant. She was just as beautiful as all the other immortal ladies, so it hadn't even occurred to her.

"When did you transition? Was it recent?"

"Yeah, although it feels like a lifetime ago." Kaia chuckled. "I crack myself up sometimes. A different lifetime, get it?"

"I guess so." Frankie smoothed a hand over her neatly combed-back hair. "Was it difficult? I mean, the transition?"

"Not really. It's not fun, and it's different for each transitioning Dormant. I itched all over, and that was pretty bad, but others had it much worse. The good news is that the clan hasn't lost a Dormant to transition yet, so you shouldn't be afraid. Also, having a god induce you improves your chances of a quick and successful transition. Seeing how you are already walking around and moving with ease the day after you were shot, I'd say that it's already happening."

It would be so nice if Kaia was right, but Frankie doubted that. "Aren't I supposed to develop a fever and lose consciousness?"

The girl frowned. "Fever is standard for all transitioning Dormants, and so are elevated heart rate and blood pressure, but not everyone loses consciousness. How old are you?"

"Twenty-seven, why?"

"The older the Dormant, the more difficult the transition, and in this regard, you are not considered young. Still, a god's venom might compensate for your age."

Frankie grimaced. "Thanks for making me feel old. Now I really need that drink."

"Enjoy." Kaia waved her off.

The girl needed to learn some social skills, but given that she was rumored to be a genius, that kind of went with the territory.
