Page 8 of Never Mine to Hold

It’s almost impossible to believe that I’m considering this as a way to pay for school. A month ago, I couldn’t have fathomed it.

What am I saying?

Days ago.

And yet, here I am. It just proves how drastically everything can change.

Shift right under your feet like an earthquake, transforming the landscape until it’s unrecognizable.

Chloe and her friend, a tall blonde who looks like a model, exchange a long, silent look chock-full of meaning before she finally says, “I know someone who can help.” Her voice sharpens. “But you have to be serious about this. I don’t want to waste my friend’s time.”

I force out the truth in a small voice. “I don’t have any other options.”

“Okay then.” She slips her cell from the pocket of her houndstooth jacket. “Give me your number.”

I rattle off the digits.

“Got it. Just sent you a text. When I have more information, I’ll let you know.”

I release a steady breath back into the atmosphere. Only now do I realize that my heart feels like it’s on the verge of exploding in my chest. My head spins as I swing around and walk back inside the student aid office.

With any luck, they’ll be able to work some financial aid and scholarship magic, and I can text Chloe that her help won’t be needed after all.

Chapter 4

Wolf

The low hum of female conversation dies away from around the corner as the click of heels grows closer. Just as the girls come into view, I straighten to my full height and lean against the wall with my arms folded across my chest.

Recognition is instantaneous as Chloe and Janine flash toothy smiles my way. Chloe and I had a class together my sophomore year. If I had a dime for every time she offered to suck my dick, I’d be a rich man.

Well, a richer man.

My family has plenty of money.

It’s what one would call generational wealth.

“Mmm, Wolf. What a pleasant surprise,” she purrs, eyes drifting over me from head to toe. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here. Slumming it in financial aid for shits and giggles?”

I smirk. “Exactly.”

She closes the distance between us before one palm settles on my chest.

Her warm breath feathers against my lips as she tips her face upward. “It’s your lucky day. I have a few hours to kill between classes. Any interest in heading back to my place?” When I remain silent, she tosses a sly look at her friend. “I’m sure Janine wouldn’t mind joining us.”

As if on cue, the blonde licks her full lips.

My fingers wrap around her slender wrist, removing it from my sweatshirt and holding it between us. “Actually, what I’m interested in is the convo I just overheard.”

Her brows slant together in confusion. “What about it?”

“Let’s just say I’m an interested buyer.”

She blinks before narrowing her eyes. “Really? I wouldn’t have pegged you for the I’m-the-only-dick-who’s-been-here chest-pounding BS.”

I shrug, refusing to explain myself. It’s none of Chloe’s damn business as to why I’m interested in Fallyn.
