Page 9 of Never Mine to Hold

The auburn-haired girl sighs before fluttering her thick, mascara-laden lashes. “That must be the reason why you’ve never taken me up on my offer.”

Sure, we’ll go with that.

“Just set it up.” There’s a beat of silence before I add, “And don’t you fucking dare shop her around. Her virginity belongs to me. Are we clear?”

“Crystal.” There’s a pause before she adds in a more business-like tone, “You do realize that I’ll be taking a small finder’s fee, right?”

I wouldn’t expect anything less. “You’d make an excellent pimp.”

Not offended in the slightest, she smirks. “A girl has to bring home the Benjamins, doesn’t she? And the title I prefer is madam, thank you very much.”

My grip loosens from around her wrist as I take a quick step in retreat. “Do you still have my number?”

She taps her cell. “Yup. I’ll give you a call once I hammer out the finer details.”

My chest expands.

Only now am I finally able to breathe again.

Just as I’m about to swing away, I stop and meet Chloe’s eyes. “It’s important that she not find out who bought her.”

There’s no way she’ll agree to this arrangement if she realizes that I’m the man behind the money. It doesn’t matter how desperate she is because desperation is the only thing that could propel Fallyn to do something like this.

Years ago, I was her everything. I would have been the first person she turned to for help. But those days are long gone. I fucking hate that so much stands between us.

If this is the only way for me to get close to her, I’ll take it. Even if it means deceiving her to do it.

“She’ll have to wear a blindfold.”

“Ohhh…you’re so damn kinky,” she says with a burst of laughter and a shake of her head. “I love it! Are you sure that you don’t want to come back to our place? I can wear a blindfold and pretend to be a blushing virgin. I’ll scream and cry all you want.”

“Were you ever a blushing virgin?” her friend asks with a chuckle.

“Probably not,” she shoots back before her gaze sharpens on me. “But for you, I’ll be whatever you want.”

I spread my hands and take another step in retreat, more than ready to end this convo. “Sorry, I gotta get to practice.”

With that, I take off. I need to put as much distance between myself and Fallyn before she leaves student services and finds me talking to Chloe.

Chapter 5

Fallyn

“Has there been any movement on the job front?” Vi asks as we hike across campus for our morning classes with our friend, Britt.

She’s someone we’ve gotten to know during the fall semester. Even though she’s older, she’s a freshman and just started college. She’s spent the past couple of years working instead of attending school.

I don’t know much about her past, but from what she’s mentioned, it seems like the two of us have our fair share of family issues and baggage. It’s probably why we’re both psychology majors. We’re trying to figure out our own shit.

It’s nice to have a friend who understands what that’s like and can sympathize.

“No,” I mutter. I spent last evening looking at any and every position I could find.

“Well, there’s always?—”

“Please don’t say it. Not this early in the morning when I haven’t sucked down at least one cup of coffee.” I spent most of the night tossing and turning, unsure what to do. I probably drafted half a dozen texts to Chloe, telling her that I was no longer interested in selling myself to the highest bidder before deleting every single one.

That thought is enough to make me wince.
