“No,” I say. “Because you’re not my mate.”

He looks into my eyes for the length of his sigh. “Not yet.”

“Fuck, you’re still trying to seduce me?”

“Such dirty words from a beautiful mouth.” His gaze drops to my lips. “Did he defile you there?”

“What?” My stomach curdles.

“Did you suck his cock?”

I curl my hands into fists. “What the hell, Scaldric? Why would you even ask that?”

“No other man should touch you.” There’s ice in his words.

“What if I told you I have sucked a thousand cocks? Would you still want to marry me?”

He arches his eyebrows with mild interest. “I wouldn’t believe you.”

I glance at the window. “Let me go.”

“My lovely Pyrah, I won’t let you go so soon. You submitted to me because deep inside, youknew.” He closes the distance between us and lifts his hand to my cheek. “We are meant to be together.”

I resist the urge to bite his fingers off. Instead, I back away from him and toy with the neck of my white satin gown.

“Sit down on the bed,” I murmur sweetly, so it doesn’t sound like a command.

When he sinks onto the edge of the mattress, his cock starts rising.

I stand by the window and strip by the glow of the moon. He watches me with his lips parted. He can’t stop staring at my breasts.

“Close your eyes,” I say.

His eyelids drop. I slide back one foot, then the other, until I’m standing on the balcony. I’m trembling with the tension of holding back my power. I climb onto the stone railing and perch with my toes curled. It’s a dizzying drop from the castle wall to the city below.

When I jump, I let my dragon out.

I shift so fast and hard that I black out for an instant. I open my wings and trust that they will stop me from falling to my death.

The wind lifts me higher. I soar over Netherhaven as a red dragon. I need to get out of here before he knows I’m gone.

Scaldric’s furious roar shakes the sky.

I glance behind me. The golden dragon launches himself from the castle. His wings pound the air as he pursues me.

Beneath me, in Netherhaven, church bells begin to ring an alarm. They trust only the golden dragon, not me.

Fuck.

I swerve away from the city and head for the sea. Fog clings to the crescent-shaped bay. Can I lose Scaldric in the white nothingness?

I fold my wings and plunge into the fog. Before I hit the sea, I snap open my wings and kill my speed. My claws skim the water with a hiss. Fog swirls around me, chaotic, though it might not be thick enough to hide me from him.

The golden dragon slams into me from the sky.

He knocks us both into the sea. The impact craters the water and flings it skyward. I lash out with my claws, but he’s already twisting away. A wave thunders over me and pushes me deeper. I kick hard and break the surface with a gasp. Another wave tries to shove me under. I swim onto the beach. Shaking, I drag myself along the wet sand.

“Are you trying to kill me?” I shout, my throat raw from salt water.
