Scaldric crashes through the waves and drives me higher onto the beach. Bristling, I bare my fangs at him.

“Pyrah. Stop.”

A feral snarl rumbles from my throat. “Fuck you.”

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Are you trying to threaten me?” I let out a reckless laugh. “Because that’s pitiful. If you come any closer, I will breathe fire until you burn.”

“I love a female who’s ferocious.” His grin glints like a blade. “It’s an admirable quality in a mate.”

“I’m not your fucking mate!”

“You will be.” His grin vanishes. “You surrendered to me. Now submit to me.”

Defiant, I lock stares with him. “No.”

Scaldric attacks without warning. I don’t have time to breathe fire. I jerk away before his jaws close around my neck. He rams into me and knocks me onto my back. His taloned hands pin down my shoulders.

He’s bigger than me. Stronger than me.

Trapped beneath him, I slash at his underbelly with my claws. His scales armor him, but I gouge him deep enough to draw blood.

His growl echoes in my own rib cage. “Submit. To. Me.”

“No!”

Can I breathe fire, or will my flames burn us both?

He takes advantage of my indecision. When he lunges, he sinks his teeth into the curve between my neck and shoulder.

Biting me.

His fangs pierce my flesh. More profound than a wedding vow.

The shock of it freezes me beneath him. He holds me in his jaws even though I’m not fighting him. Even though I’ve never felt so powerless before. After an eternity, he releases me. Blood—myblood—trickles from his mouth.

His icy eyes shine with triumph. “You are meant for me.”

An ugly feeling twists inside me. This should be such an intimate moment between mates, but he never asked for my consent. This wound marks me as his. Everyone will know. I want to destroy every trace of him on my body.

I drop my gaze as if I’m submitting, because I know he will hurt me more if I don’t.

Scaldric demandsthat I shift back into a woman.

Fear flows like ice through my veins, but I obey him. Shivering, I hug myself and wait. Pain throbs where his teeth pierced my neck.

He bit me.

It still doesn’t feel real. When I touch my neck, my fingers come away red.

“You said you didn’t want to hurt me,” I say.

Still a dragon, his pupils narrow to slits. “Some pain is necessary.”

“Necessary for what?” I want to scream at him, but my voice sounds empty.
