“It all depends on how well, this pancake tastes.”

A wide smile spreads across her face as she chews. “Is that a yes?”

“Is there more of this?”

“Yeah, and I can even make more if you want.”

“Then, you’re forgiven.”

Chapter 12

Jewel

Last night when I found out that Kyle knew about the arrangement my parents have with his, I felt even more heartbroken because I felt stupid that all this while he knew about it and never thought to tell me about it.

At some point I thought that he was in on the plan, but seeing him right now, I know that he isn’t lying about finding out about it after we got married. Kyle is one of the few persons that I trust.

“How did you get to find out about it, did they tell you themselves?” Kyle asks as he takes a sip of his coffee.

I shake my head in response. “I overheard them talking about it. It seems like your father hasn’t fulfilled his part of the deal, and my parents were having an argument about it.”

Tears pool in my eyes as my mind goes back to when my parents walked out of their bedroom and saw me standing by the door.

Twenty-four hours ago

“Jewel!” My mom has her mouth wide open in shock as she sees me, the realization that I just heard what they were talking about, evident in her eyes.

“Jewel you’re here…” comes my father’s surprised voice as he sees me.

I open my mouth to speak but no words come out, it seems like I have lost my voice. Tears stream down my cheeks. “So, you both made me marry Kyle because of the money that you would be getting?” My voice sounds so broken I can barely believe that it’s mine.

“Mija…” my mom tries to touch me but I take a step back. “It’s not what you think.”

“It’s not about what I think, it’s about what I heard! How could you both do this to me?”

“The business isn’t doing too well,” comes my dad’s voice. “If you had paid attention, then you would have noticed.”

I scoff in disbelief. “So, it’s my fault now?” I can’t believe he would turn this around on me.

“No one said it’s your fault.” My mom looks like she’s about to cry. “We… we needed money to help the business and Anderson offered to help.”

“In exchange for you to pawn your only daughter off to his son!”

“No one pawned you off!” My dad barks. “The business is at the brink of collapse what were we supposed to do!”

“Go to the bank, take a loan, do anything instead of handing your daughter off to the highest bidder.”

“And you think that we haven’t tried that?” My father throws his hands in the air.

“Of course, you would think getting a loan is as easy as walking into a Gucci shop and buying a bag. What do you know about business?”

I can’t believe he isn’t remorseful. Why can’t he just admit for once that he’s wrong? Why can’t he just apologize? Not that it would change anything, but I know I won’t feel terrible like I’m feeling right now.

“Jewel…”

My mother runs after me as I run down the stairs. I just want to be as far away from them as possible.

“Ma’am, is everything alright?” My driver asks me as I run towards the car. “Give me the keys.” I clean my tear-stained cheeks with the back of my palm and stretch out the other for him to hand over the car keys.
