I place my arm around his arm, hugging him. “He will be alright, we need to have faith,” I whisper.

We both remain silent for a while, just gazing at the stars. And then he turns to look at me. “Thanks for being here.”

I offer him a smile. “You need not thank me.”

Kyle is silent for a moment as he just stares at me, and then he whispers, “I love you,” as he leans down to kiss me.

And at this moment, I don’t doubt that he does truly love me, and I love him too. “I love you,” I whisper, my lips ghosting his. We both remain silent for a moment gazing into each other’s eyes.

“I think we should go back inside, and be with your mother.”

He nods. “Yeah.”

“Can you try talking to her? She feels bad for a lot of things and would like to talk to you about it.”

“I will, but not now,” he says nodding as he places his arm around my shoulders leading me back inside.

Kyle’s mom is still in the position I had left her, and she’s mindlessly tapping on her knee, staring into space.

“Hey, has the doctor come out to speak with you yet?” Kyle asks his mom. She shakes her head. “No, they’ve all been going in and out of his room. I’m worried Kyle.” Her eyes become misty again.

Kyle sits beside her, gently rubbing her back. “Don’t worry, I’m sure he’s going to be alright.”

I decide to get myself some water, giving them the space that they need to talk. As I make my way toward the water dispenser. I unlock my phone staring at my mom’s last message begging for us to talk.

As I press the lever to fill a plastic cup with water, my thoughts swirl like a turbulent storm. The strained relationship with myown parents weighs heavily on my mind. Kyle’s father’s accident just made me realize how feeble life is.

The realization that life is fragile, and relationships even more so, dawns upon me with newfound clarity.

I take a sip of water, the taste lacking the usual satisfaction it brings. The plastic cup feels insubstantial in my hands. I should call my mom.

I startle, almost dropping the cup of water in my hand as a sudden vibration startles me as my phone lights up with a call from my mother. The device feels foreign in my grip as I hesitate, wondering if I should answer or not.

I was just thinking of her a moment ago and now she’s calling. Taking it as a sign to mend fences with her, I take a deep breath before swiping my thumb across the screen, answering the call.

“Hey Jewel, sorry for calling you this late, but Kyle’s mother just called to tell us that Anderson was involved in an accident.” I can hear the worry in her tone.

“Yeah, we are currently at the hospital.”

“How is he? I couldn’t hear much of what she was saying, she was crying when she called.”

“We don’t know the situation of things yet; the doctors are still attending to him.”

“Your father and I will be coming to the hospital in the morning.”

“Okay.”

There’s a pause and then she goes on to ask, “Are you alright?”

“Yes, mom, I’m fine.”

Another pause.

“I will see you in the morning.”

“Okay.”

After I end the call, I finish my water and trash the disposable cup before walking back to join Kyle and his mom.
