“What would you like to have?” He asks as he signals a waiter.

“A cup of coffee will be fine.”

The waiter approaches, and we place an order for coffee. “How is your father doing?”

“He’s getting better,” I respond resisting the urge to tell him to get to the point why he had called for the meeting.

Soon, the waiter returns with our coffee, the warm aroma wafting through the air, and I watch Mr. Bright as he takes a sip of his coffee, while I don't even bother to touch mine.

"Kyle," Mr. Bright begins, his tone serious. "There's been a development that requires your immediate attention. It concerns the direction of Anderson Corp."

I raise an eyebrow, the intrigue evident in my expression. "What is it?"

His gaze intensifies, a mix of concern and urgency. "It's about James, your cousin."

The name sends a ripple of discomfort through me. "What about him?"

Mr. Bright hesitates, choosing his words carefully. "There's evidence that he's been maneuvering behind the scenes, trying to sway the board against you."

I know I shouldn’t be surprised about this, but somehow, I still am. I lean back in my seat tapping my fingers on the table.

“I’m sure this isn’t a shock to you, you already know that your cousin has always resented your role as CTO, and he sees this as an opportunity to seize control. He wants the CEO position for himself, and he's willing to use any means necessary to get it."

Mr. Bright leans back, considering the gravity of the situation. "Kyle, we can't let James manipulate the board and take control of Anderson Corp. We need a strategy to counter his moves."

I lean in, my focus intensifying. "What do you suggest?"

"I propose we gather support from the other board members who haven't been swayed by James's influence," Mr. Bright suggests. "We need a united front to ensure that the vote goes in your favor."

I nod, recognizing the importance of securing alliances within the board. "Who do you think we can count on?"

"There are a few members who have shown a keen interest in your vision for the company," he replies. "I'll reach out to them, express our concerns about James's motives, and try to garner their support."

I appreciate Mr. Bright's proactive approach. "And what about James's bribery attempts?"

He smirks a glint of determination in his eyes. "We expose them. Let the board know what James has been up to behind closed doors. His underhanded tactics won't stand a chance in the light of day."

A plan begins to take shape in my mind. "We need evidence, something concrete to present to the board."

Mr. Bright nods. "I have someone discreet in mind who can help us uncover the truth. We'll gather the evidence, expose James's machinations, and rally the board to your side."

As the pieces fall into place, a sense of determination settles over me. With Mr. Bright as an ally, I'm ready to confront the challenges ahead and ensure that James's ambitions are thwarted.

Chapter 24

Jewel

The air in the room feels dense with unresolved tension as I sit across from my mother. The awkward silence hangs heavily between us, a stark reminder of the strained relationship we've had since my brother died, and then it got worse when the arranged marriage was set in motion.

Since Kyle’s dad’s accident, Kyle and I decided to make peace with our parents, instead of holding out on them.

My mom and I have talking on the phone since then, she calls me every morning to check on me.

When she called this morning and asked that I come over to the house for us to talk, I decided to oblige her and hear what she wants to talk about.

“How are you?” My mom asks, breaking the silence.

Rosa walks in carrying a tray of sweet treats, comprising of shortbread, and some of my favorite treats.
