“That would be quite the wake-up.”

“Are you giving me the green light?”

I smiled at the dress he’d told me to buy as I stopped outside the window. “Only if you’re not too drunk.”

“Jesus Christ.”

“Thanks for the dress,” I whispered. “Hurry home when you can.”

I hung up before he could respond, my cheeks aching from my smile. Noah Jennings had been trying to get into my ass since I’d met him, and now, after five years, I’d given him the green light. I was curious to see whether or not he would stick to the terms.

-Morning-

Noah ended up not coming home at all. I woke up to several drunken, narcotic-fueled text messages that were hard to make sense of. The last was the worst, and it was just an attempt at an apology.

Noah:

Si speey bb

I figured out the “so sorry baby” by looking at the letters next to the ones he typed on the keyboard. He’d turned off the autocorrect on his phone a while ago, and although he was usually a decent typer, that didn’t extend to his inebriated state. The ones before had been about how much he loved me; the guilt more than implicated in each when they’d come through.

I didn’t know why he was apologizing, but if I’d had to guess, I’d say he’d found himself balls deep in another woman while he was higher than a kite. Seeing as monogamy was a very new concept to him, I debated just letting it go altogether.

I made myself some coffee and got in the tub, watching what I could see of the Pacific roll in and out against the shore. I’d just topped it off with hot water for the third time when I heard the bedroom door open, and Noah dropped his things on the nightstand.

I stayed staring out at the ocean, the ghost of his outline appearing in the glass as he approached the tub, gloriously naked.

“Morning, Beautiful.”

“Morning.”

He stepped in the other end of the tub and lowered himself into the bubbles, his legs stretching out on either side of me as he sank with a groan of appreciation.

“You mad?” he asked, nudging my hip with his foot.

“About what?” I asked, turning my head so I could meet his eyes.

“Me staying out all night.”

I huffed out a genuine laugh. “You’re a grown-ass man, Noah. You texted me to tell me you were too fucked up to leave Rothman’s house.”

“He had a guy, kinda like what Lucas was for us. Finds all the good drugs.”

“You don’t have to explain.”

“You sure about that?”

“Why would you think otherwise?”

“Strawberry, you may not be mad, but I can see the disappointment written all over those freckles of yours.”

“Shut up, you idiot.”

Noah laughed, bending his knees and moving toward me, pulling me closer, so I was straddling him. “I really am sorry, babe.”
