“For what?” I challenged.

“For not being here to sleep next to you. For not giving you the best anal sex of your life. For not waking up to you like I want to do for the rest of my life.”

I studied Noah’s face. The sentiment appeared genuine, but there was something else there I couldn’t put my finger on, and I hated how paranoid it made me feel. If we were starting a relationship—if I was truly considering moving here to be with him—I didn’t want to start our relationship on a bedrock of lies.

“Can I be honest with you, Noah?”

“Always, babe,” he mumbled, running his finger through a dome of bubbles that were covering my nipple.

“Good. I want you to know you can always be honest with me, too.”

He paused for a moment, his thumb sweeping the bubbles away before he pinched my nipple and watched it grow hard under his ministrations. Once he was satisfied, he gazed up at me, his eyes meeting mine and holding them.

“I didn’t fuck another woman, Amber.”

I wasn’t a human lie detector. All I had was my intuition, and everything in me said he was telling the truth.

“Okay.”

Noah nodded, a hint of what I could only describe as surprise creasing the corners of his eyes as he smiled at me. Reaching out a hand, I cupped his cheek and pressed my lips against his gently before I spoke again.

“If it ever does happen, promise me you’ll tell me. We’re human, and we make mistakes.”

“Anyone ever told you how fucking amazing you are before?”

I gave him a coy smile. “Let’s not ruin the mood.”

Noah gave a bark of laughter, his hands finding my hips and lifting me so I was hovering over his lap, his erection pressing against me like a threat.

“I love you, Amber Randall. I think I always will.”

He lowered me down onto him, the water rising and slipping over the top of the tub in waves as we began to make love.

“What do you want for breakfast?”Noah asked as we brushed our teeth side by side together.

“Don’t you have meetings today?”

“Nope. I’ll have enough of those tonight so I want to spend the day with you.”

I continued brushing my teeth, thinking about what I wanted, coming up blank. I was still in post-coital bliss, cataloging every ache I had in my body.

“I have no idea.”

“Okay, let me narrow it down for you. Avocado toast or eggs benedict?”

“Two of my favorites.”

He smiled as he rinsed off his toothbrush. “You always assume I don’t pay any attention.”

“I don’t—” He gave me a look. “Okay, maybe a little, but I like being surprised by you.” I stepped closer to him, my arms over his shoulders, hands tangling in the hair at the back of his neck. “Can we go to that place with the eggs benedict made with crab cakes?”

“My girl has good taste.” He pressed a kiss to my lips, winked, and stepped back, dropping his wet towel to the floor before heading to the bedroom. I bent to pick it up, but before I could grab it, his voice found me from the bedroom. “Do not touch that towel, Strawberry. Drop yours and live dangerously.”

“Leaving a wet towel on the floor isn’t living dangerously.”

“Try it. Defy the voice of your parents just once.”

Shaking my head, I unhooked the tuck of my towel and allowed it to fall to the floor at my feet. It wasn’t living dangerously. It was living slovenly.
