“A little over two hours.”

“And the party?”

“What about it?” he asked, taking a mouthful of his breakfast.

“Whose shindig is it?”

“Shindig?”

“Shut up. You know what I mean.”

Noah smiled and sat back in the booth to grin at me. “Macie Rayne.”

My mouth fell open. “TheMacie Rayne?”

Macie Rayne was one of the most prolific singer-songwriters ever to have existed, and she was only in her thirties. She was known as a sweetheart with a wild streak a mile wide. She didn’t conform to what people said she should be, and she broke every mold the tabloids put her in. She was quite possibly the only person I would ever geek this hard over. She was gorgeous, too.

“I’m so glad you told me,” I said, setting down my silverware.

“Why?”

“So that I can geek the fuck out before we get there.”

“Strawberry, are you starstruck?”

I held my index finger and thumb together with a small gap between them. “Just a little. Don’t judge me.”

“No judgment here, baby. She’s a fucking superstar.”

“Will producers be there?”

Noah nodded and continued to eat. “They want to try and persuade Macie to take a minor role for star quality and maybe appear on the soundtrack. We’re all there to charm her.”

“You don’t sound convinced.”

“The woman likes to let go. She won’t want to talk business at a party, but they said we’re there to make an impression when I brought that up. Talking will come later.”

“You’re telling me that we’re going there to impress, Macie Rayne?”

Noah smiled at me. “You’re going to do that with one look at you in that dress, babe. Now we have to figure out what to do with me.”

“You?”

He smiled. “Thing is, you’re more her type, Strawberry.”

I wondered for a nanosecond whether I should feel outraged that I was being used as bait, but the truth was, I didn’t care. Noah was so happy. I would have given him my soul had he asked.

-Early Evening-

Being pampered for the day was one of my favorite things in the world. The first time I’d ever experienced the luxury was before prom. I mean, I’d had manicures and pedicures, had my hair done and my makeup, but all at once, I owed that first experience to prom. Of course, with friends premieres and weddings, I’d also had that pleasure, but they held nothing compared to what Noah had treated me to all afternoon. It had started with a mud bath, progressed to a long full-body massage, followed by a well-spent period in the steam room that I was glad we were alone for, and then the usual mani, pedi, hair, and makeup. I had been buffed, shined, and glamorized. I felt like a million bucks.

Then I was treated to another wonderful meal before we got on the road for the ride to San Diego.

“You look amazing,” Noah said for maybe the third time in an hour and a half, his eyes straying from the road so he could look over at me. I couldn’t see his eyes behind his sunglasses, but I didn’t miss the intensity.
