But even though I wanted to tell her everything, I knew I would keep my secrets for a little longer.

I couldn’t risk ruining our friendship before Brett knew about the baby.

Chapter Twelve: Brett

ThedoorclosedbehindGeorgia as she slid back into the spare room before sunrise. I stood on the other side of the door momentarily, a small smile on my face.

Last night had been risky, but having her fall asleep in my arms had been worth it.

I sighed and ran my hand through my hair before heading downstairs. I didn’t bother to stop for a cup of coffee on my way through the kitchen. There was more than enough waiting in the break room at work. I didn’t want to have an awkward moment with Mia and Georgia.

I am still waiting.

Sooner or later, I would have to tell my daughter the truth. I didn’t know how she would react when I told her that I was falling for her best friend.

If our roles were reversed, I know that I would be pissed.

I had to prepare for the likelihood that Mia might not want to speak to me for a while after she learned the truth.

She would get over it eventually, though.

At least, that was what I told myself as I got in my car and drove to work.

As I drove, I kept the music up loud, trying to drown out the worry circling through my mind. When I was with Georgia, it was easy to pretend it was just us.

However, when I was away from her, the reality of what we were doing sunk in.

I sighed and drummed my fingers on the wheel as I navigated the streets while the sun started peering over the horizon.

Matt’s car was sitting in the parking lot when I got to work. I groaned and leaned back, tilting my head back against the seat as I tried to mentally prepare for whatever he wanted.

After a moment, I exited my car and walked into the building. Matt stepped out of my office and nodded to me.

“You’re here a lot lately,” I said as I brushed by him and sat down behind my desk.

Matt sighed and closed the door. “I wouldn’t have to be here if I could trust you not to ruin your business with whatever game you’re playing.”

“I’m not playing any game. You may be my friend, Matt, but you’re also my employee. Whatever you came here to say, you better think carefully about how you will say it.”

His lips pressed together in a thin line. “I came here to grab some files early this morning and to let the cleaners in since one of the others couldn’t be here today. But, unfortunately, the cleaners found something in your washroom.”

My pulse pounded as I arched an eyebrow. I didn’t know what the cleaners would have found in my washroom, but it wasn’t good if Matt had waited to talk to me about it.

“They found this,” he said, pulling a black lacey thong from his pocket. He tossed it across my desk at me before perching himself on the edge of the desk. “Want to tell me something?”

“You already know who this belongs to,” I said, taking the thong and stuffing it into my desk drawer. “I don’t know what more there is to talk about.”

“I think that the pair of you are being exceedingly stupid. Have you ever considered what happens to her career if it gets out that she is sleeping with her boss?”

“Of course. However, it is her choice to make.”

“You’re not encouraging her to choose differently, are you?”

I sighed and leaned back in my chair. “It isn’t as easy as that.”

“You wouldn’t encourage her to choose differently because you think that there is a world where all of this will turn out perfectly for the both of you.”

“I think we could both be happy with each other.”
