“I actually came with my jet, but thank you for your concern, do send my regards to your husband. In our kind of business, it’s not every day we see people stand firm even faced with such an amount.”

Martha smiled again, and for a moment, she looked like a typical replica of Lucy. She removed the strands of hair covering her eyes and nodded. “I will ensure he hears you have such high regard for him.

“And also convince him the price is . . .”

She chuckled and shook her head. “Goodbye, Mr. Blackwood.”

I sighed, smiled, put on my sunglasses, and took another look at their home. “Well, this wasn’t a wasted flight like what you thought. Goodbye, Mrs. Edwards, it’s been a pleasure.” I muttered and began to head to the door.

“Safe trip.” She whispered as I walked out the door, turned, and found her waving at me.

I waved back, turned, and headed towards the waiting car, not sure how to feel with the refusal of the family to sell and the knowledge that this was Lucy’s home, the woman who was slowly moving her way into my heart.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

LUCYEDWARDS

“Here, have some more rice,” Ella said as she added more rice to my plate. “You have been drawing since this afternoon.”

“Thanks,” I muttered as I continued to eat ravenously, surprised I was this hungry. “It feels like I haven’t eaten in ages.”

“That’s what art does to you.” Eve took a bite from the meat before her. “Drains the last strength in you, but you did incredible work. I didn’t know we could finish the draft today.”

I sipped the wine. “I was motivated.”

“Pity, my son wasn’t around to see you draw or see me in such an amazing dress.”

“Talking about your son, where is he? Did he call you, mom?” Ella asked, turning toward her mother.

“No, he didn’t, and it’s already late.” She checked her watch, and her frown deepened. “It’s already ten, and he’s yet to be back. Could you go and get me my phone, please, sweetheart? I will call him to see where he is.”

“I guess he’s in one of his many hideouts. There’s no need—”

Eve raised her hand, “My phone, sweetheart.”

“All right, all right,” Ella said as she dropped her spoon, sipped her wine, and headed toward the table where the phone was.

The door opened almost immediately, and we all turned to see Mason walking toward us while removing his tie. “Talk of the devil, and he appears,” Ella muttered as she took the phone and began to head to her mother.

“Evening, Mom,” Mason said as he turned to her, ignoring his sister.

“How did the trip go? Hope it turned out fine?” Eve asked, “You were gone so long I thought something must have gone wrong.”

“Everything is all right. It was very revealing.” He removed his jacket and turned toward me as if he was directing that statement to me.

Eve focused her gaze on him. “Revealing, how?”

“Let’s just say I found out some quite interesting things.”

“Good or bad?”

He looked at me and spoke, as if he was talking directly to me, “A mixture of both, but the good outweighs the bad, I believe.” He said and finally turned toward his mother. “How did the drawing go?”

“It was brilliant,” Eve remarked while clapping her hands. “Lucy here did amazing magic with her hands, and I can’t wait to share it with my friends.”

“Care to show me?”

“Of cour—”
