“Sorry, but I don’t like people looking at my work when it’s not one hundred percent done,” I muttered as I took my wine, sipped it, and turned toward Mason, “Sorry, work ethics.”

“Of course, of course.” He said and clapped, “I will retire early. Please ask the chef to bring my food up to my room.”

Eve looked at him, surprised. “Your room? Why can’t they bring it up here? Let’s have a good family meal. It's been so long since we had something like that.”

“Yeah, but maybe in the morning. It’s been a long day, and I want to get into the tub as soon as possible.” He remarked and began to head toward the door, leaving us alone in the room again.

“Why is he so stubborn?” Eve turned toward her. “I only wanted us to have a family dinner.”

“He’s your son,” Ella muttered as she began to eat, “I think he’s the one who should answer that.”

“I don’t know what’s wrong with you two. You were very close before.”

“Until Dad died. Then he turned into a robot without feelings.”

“Oh, your words are so harsh,” Eve muttered, holding her heart. “He just has too many responsibilities on his mind. Losing your father was hard on us all.”

Ella sighed and shook his head. “Yes, it was. It doesn’t give him to right to be an ass all of the time. Too many responsibilities that made him forget how to be human. Please spare me that, Mom.”

Eve tried to speak again but stopped, ate a few more bites of fruit on her plate, stood, and left the room angrily.

Ella stopped eating, covered her face, and sighed. “Amazing.”

“You know,” I blurted out, clearing my throat, “I heard your brother say that he would lay his life on the line for you and your mom.”

Ella chuckled and looked at me. “When did he say that? In your dreams, I guess.”

“No.”

Ella laughed and started eating again. “That is a whole line of bullshit, Lucy.”

“I am really serious.”

“So, tell me,” she asked, pointing her spoon at me, “when did you hear him say that, and with whom?”

I kept quiet for a moment, trying to figure out the words I was going to use without having to implicate myself any further.

“When I was going to the restroom, I saw him speaking with someone.”

“Who?” She asked, not removing her gaze while I buried my face in the food. “The person doesn’t have a name or a gender.”

“It was a female.”

“Now, I know you are lying.” Ella said and continued eating, “There were no single ladies that my brother talked to last night. I had my eyes on him until he disappeared.”

“It wasn’t in the hall it was close to the restroom. I was coming out when I heard him speaking with her.”

Ella looked at me again, paused, and pointed at me. “You are joking, right?”

“Of course not,” I turned to her. “I heard him clearly.”

Excited, Ella stood from her side and walked over, “Were you able to see her face? Was she beautiful? What was she wearing? What color was her hair?”

“Ella, holy. What’s with all the questions?” I frowned and looked at her excited face. “Shouldn’t you be happy that he had such nice things to say about you?”

“No way, you know what I think?” Ella turned around and looked at us, trying to ensure we were alone in the room. “I think Mason was just trying to get in her pants. He’s willing to lie to her so she could see him as a kind gentleman.”

“What?”
