I frowned and shrugged, “I am serious, Lucy. I believe it will be the best thing for our family and for our careers.”

“My career,” she fired back, this time not smiling. “God, you don’t stop to amaze me. You just sit there like a boss and make decisions about my life without consulting me. Damn, so it means Ella has been right all along?”

I took a deep breath and sat up, “I didn’t say this was how it would be. I am just trying to bring out my opinion.”

“Sounds very much like an order to me,” she retorted and folded her arms across her chest.

“I assure you, it is not an order. I am simply just trying to make suggestions.”

The door opened, and Ella and the doctor entered the room together.

I rested my back on the chair as I watched Ella look at Lucy and me before climbing to the bed to sit beside Ella.

“All right, here you are, Lucy. How’s everyone doing today?” The doctor asked placing his hand on Lucy’s arm, and I turned toward Ella, trying to see if she might have understood when the doctor asked how everyone is doing.

“Doing fine.”

“That’s good to hear.” The doctor took his hand away from Lucy’s arm and turned towards me. “Has she eaten this morning?”

I scratched my jaw and turned toward Lucy. “Not yet, actually, she just woke up.”

“Lucy, you must be hungry by now,” the doctor asked her as she nodded her head in agreement.

“Yes, actually, I am a little hungry, now that you mention it.” Lucy said.

“Ok, then let’s get you some food. I will put in the orders for your breakfast. We will start small and work up your appetite as we go.” The doctor stated, as he started to make his way to the door. “The nurse will be in shortly with your medications, Lucy. I will check in on you again in a bit.” He said, and as he walked out the door, Lucy thanked him.

I got up and followed him out into the hallway.

“Hey, doc?” I said. “Thank you for taking such good care of her.”

“I am happy to help get her feeling better so she can hopefully have an uneventful pregnancy.” The doctor said. “But it is still going to take some time to get her up to good health. She needs to eat, and rest. That baby is taking a lot out of her already, so the more rest, the better.”

Yeah,” I scoffed, “There’s no denying that her hormones are going crazy. One moment, she’s crying. The next, she’s laughing and talking. Hell, it feels like a roller coaster drive in there.”

“That’s perfectly normal in pregnancy, my friend.” The doctor stated. “Help her as best you can, but ultimately, it is her body that is going through all these changes. So, just remember that pregnancy can be really hard on women. Sadly, it seems Lucy is one of the unfortunate ones who isn’t well during pregnancy. Hopefully, in time, she will start to feel better.”

Yes, the doctor was right. I was enjoying some of it and didn’t want it to stop.

“Have you told your people?” He asked, breaking the silence after some minutes.

“Not yet,” I muttered.

“Why?”

“Lucy still doesn’t know how to handle the fact she’s pregnant.”

“Well, she has a little time before she will start to show. She will come around once she is feeling better.”

“It’s not exactly as easy as you think, Doc.”

“It is. She is fragile at the moment and needs to take care of herself and the baby. If she doesn’t, it could cause harm to both her and the baby. The earlier everybody knows and begins to give her the perfect care she needs, the more she and the baby will be in safe hands.”

“I will see what I can do. But it’s not that simple,” I cursed, scratching my head.

“Nothing is ever simple with the Blackwoods. Well then, I will leave you to it.”

“Thanks, Doc.” We walked a few more steps and stopped in front of the kitchen. I opened the door to it and stepped back a bit. “Sarah, over there, will be able to assist you with your orders,” I said as I pointed to one of my kitchen staff. She’s in charge of the menu,” I muttered, “I will be right here.”
