The doctor sighed, patted my back, and entered the kitchen while I closed the door.

“What are you doing over here, son?”

I turned in fright to see Mother standing just behind me. “Fuck, Mom, you scared the hell out of me.”

“Why should you be scared?” Mother asked, frowning, “Are you hiding something from me?”

“Hide something? Of course not, I was just trying—”

The door opened immediately, interrupting my speech.

“Hello, ma’am.” The doctor smiled at my mom, who looked more than surprised to see the two of us in the kitchen.

“What’s going on?” Mom asked the both of us.

“We—”

“Care to give us a minute, Doc?”

The doctor nodded and turned away from us, heading to the hallway.

“Care for a walk, Mom?”

“Of course.”

*******

We walked outside the garden, my hands in my pocket as we watched the Gardeners do their work keeping the flowers in perfect shape.

I was trying to find the words to start the conversation but couldn’t. I knew there was no need to keep this a secret from Mom anymore.

“We have been walking for the past thirty minutes, son, and you spent most of it sighing. Tell me what it is. Maybe I can help.”

I sighed again and turned to Mom, “Well, Lucy doesn’t have an ailment of sorts, per se. She is in fact pregnant.”

Mom smiled and shook her head.

“You do not seem surprised?”

“I am in my late sixties. I can identify someone pregnant even from a mile away.”

I sighed and shook my head, “Why didn’t you say anything earlier.”

“And kill the fun?” She turned toward me, “That’s absolutely impossible. The only problem I have is identifying the person responsible.”

I took a quick breath and turned away from her. “The person is standing right beside you, Mom.”

Mom stopped in her tracks, and turned, folding her arms, “What?”

“Yeah, Mom.”

“How sure are you that you are the father?”

I straightened my shirt and dug my hands into my pant pockets. “Because I just know.”

“Oh boy,” Mom muttered and resumed walking. “But Ella said you both were enemies of some sort? Clearly that isn’t the case.”

I scratched my head and followed her, “We were never enemies, Mom. There was never, nor is there, a reason for us to be enemies. She was likely just following suit with Ella.”
