I took a sip of coffee and browsed through the file that Elvis, my friend who works in the Ministry of Information, sent me about Lucy, the supposed best friend.

I scrolled through the files, a registered frown on my face because it appeared I was looking at the file of a saint, and nobody was one.

Her background check says she was born in Tennessee to Mr. Edwards, and his wife Martha, good Christian people, and they have raised Lucy and her younger brother, as respectable children by putting them through the best schools.

I checked through Lucy’s records at school, and it didn’t disappoint. She had been at the top of her art class, to which she earned a scholarship to study at the best University of her choice, and she had chosen an Ivy League School. That was probably how she met my sister, and they remained best friends.

“No blemishes.” A voice in my head muttered, and it made me more frustrated. I checked through her relationships, and found absolutely nothing,

I closed the MacBook, took the cup of coffee, and moved toward the window rails while sipping it gently.

There was no way a beautiful girl like that would not have a boyfriend in this century unless the men in her life had all been blind. And such knowledge had me wondering if she had an ulterior motive, and that my sister was the easiest target to get close to us.

It’s not like people haven’t tried before. I sneered and sipped my coffee she would know how fruitless her mission and those who sent her were.

In all my years of taking over the family business, and pushing it toward the legend it was now, nobody has succeeded in coming close. Those who have attempted, have encountered their ultimate challenge. I was sure that in their next life, they would be well enough to run whenever they heard of the name the Blackwoods.

With a chuckle, I stepped back, closed the curtain, turned, and headed back to the table, where I dropped the cup and then proceeded to get into the bathroom to undress and soak myself in a hot bath. At the same time, I structured the perfect plan to expose the beautiful, damning Lucy of the fraud she was.

But just as I was about to enter, a sharp ring from my phone stopped me in my tracks. Swearing, I turned, grabbed my robe, and headed towards the table again. I picked up the phone and looked at the caller it was Mom. I sighed, scratched my head, and answered the call, “Hello Mom.”

“Oh, my sweet, sweet boy,” Came the quick reply, “How are you doing?”

I frowned and moved towards the window, unable to hear her correctly, “I can’t seem to hear what you are saying, Mom. Where are you?”

“Oh,” She muttered over the phone, “I am at this party in Paris, and God, son, you should see just how amazing this place is.” She said, her voice a little clearer now.

I rubbed my forehead. “I thought you told me you were in Austria the day before?”

“Oh, come on, I was there three days ago, I have been to England, and went back to France when a friend there told me about this amazing place.”

“You have been to three countries in just two days?” I asked, bewildered.

“It’s three days, son, and there was no way I would have missed this or anything in the world.”

“You are contributing a lot to destroy our globe with how you burn fuel with that jet of yours.”

“Oh, not another global warming lecture. Especially since you fly ALL over the United States with that helicopter of yours. That is definitely not what I called you for.”

“Then what is it, Mom?” I asked while looking at the bathroom door, unable to wait and get myself soaked in that tub.

“How is the preparation for the board members’ party going?”

“It’s going fine. Ella came earlier as requested and did a pretty good job ensuring things work out fine around here.”

“Oh, that’s great. I can’t wait to see you both once I am back, it feels like it has been forever since I have seen the both of you.”

I scoffed and looked away, “She came with a lady she claims is her best friend.”

“What? Ella brought a friend? A best friend and I didn’t know about that?”

I shrugged and nodded, “Seems so.”

“The girl must be very patient to keep up with my angel.”

“I don’t care. I am still running a background check on her. She might be another enemy sent to infiltrate our family.”
