“Now, now, son, are you hearing me?”

“Yes, I hear you.”

“Please do not get in between two best friends. I don’t want Ella getting angry.”

“Come on, Mom, and she’s my sister too. I will just do a little check on the person she brought here.”

“The two of us know you won’t find anything. You come in loud and firing, and your sister has done enough complaining. I don’t want this to add to the list, please, son.”

I nodded and looked toward the bathroom door again. “I understand.”

“But do you have a reason to suspect her or her motives?” Mom asked again, this time her voice low.

“Not yet, but I am still looking.”

“Please promise me to take it slowly and easily without rousing Ella’s suspicion.”

“Of course, I will be as discreet as ever.”

“And when you don’t find anything, please do not press it any further.”

“Of course.”

“Promise me?”

I rubbed my forehead and sighed. “Yeah, I promise. When shall we expect you then?”

“Soon, I have some other places I need to be before I get back. Want me to get you something?”

“No, nothing, just come back in full health,” I said, smiling.

“And before I forget, Mrs. Anderson’s daughter will be—”

I disconnected the call just before she could finish, not wanting to hear another of her cheap shots at matchmaking.

Right now, dating wasn’t on the top of my list and wouldn’t be for some time. For now, all my focus was putting more of our business in foreign countries, and finding out if Ella’s friend, Lucy, is who she says she is.

I removed my robe and headed toward the bathroom for my much-needed bath.

CHAPTER THREE

LUCYEDWARDS

“Did your brother leave?” I asked Ella, who was beside me, inspecting the garden and its flowers.

“I don’t know. I didn’t hear the sound of the helicopter, which has always been his favorite means of transportation. Why do you ask?”

I blushed and looked away, not ready to admit that he had yet to leave my mind after my first encounter with her brother yesterday.

“Nothing.” I lied, “Just wondering.”

“He’s the boss. He comes and leaves whenever he pleases.”

“Maybe to go see his girlfriend.” I blurted, unable to stop myself.

“Who? My brother?” Ella asked as she burst into laughter while holding her chest.

“What’s so funny?” I asked, turning to her, surprised. “He doesn’t have one?”
