“Man, she’s pregnant, sick, and needs all the care she can get right now. I would feel much better if she were under my roof getting the best care out there.”

“You do know she has parents who raised her, right?” Josh said as I looked up at him. “I am certain they are more than capable of providing the care she needs. Don’t forget she has a family, too.”

“What am I supposed to do then? Just walk away and hope she changes her mind in time for the baby to arrive?

“Well, it may be your only option for right now. It’s not like you can influence her choices. She sounds like she is a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, frowning at him.

“Since neither she nor her family cares about money, which is very rare, I think you should show them the humane side of you.”

“Haven’t I done that already? Man, her father struck me on the face, unprovoked.”

“Unprovoked? Give me a break.? You got his daughter pregnant after trying to steal his property from under him, then offered him fifty million dollars to try to get him to sell it to you. Come on, man, you and I know there’s a limit to what a man can take.”

“Christ, Josh, I am telling you, I had already slept with her before I knew who her fucking father was.”

“And do you think he will believe that shit? God knows I wouldn’t believe it if it was me.”

“So, what you are saying is that I have lost all hope with Lucy and the baby?”

“Only if you continue acting the way you are now.”

I sighed, rested my head on my hands, and closed my eyes momentarily.

“If you want to come out on top, Mason, try and see this through the eyes of a father with a daughter. Ask yourself what you would do if you were in his shoes and what you think would make you forgive someone if they had done to your child what you did to Lucy.”

As much as I hated to admit it, Josh made sense, and it made me more frustrated, knowing it would be an arduous task, trying to get on the good side of a man who had blacklisted me.

I ran my fingers through my hair and looked at Josh, who was sipping his drink and had his eyes fixed on the crowd.

“What if he never comes around?”

He turned toward me and shrugged. “You and I know we don’t just accept no as an answer and move on. We keep fighting to get what we want, and if Lucy and this baby are what you want, you need to fight for them. Change your approach from a businessman to a man who wants a family, to be a father and maybe even a husband.”

“How am I supposed to do that when the entire family doesn’t ever want to see me again?”

“You can’t blame them. You are difficult to deal with.”

I chuckled and folded my arms. “All lies against me, of course.”

Josh laughed and poked my side. “You wish.”

We burst out laughing, and it felt too good laughing again. It had been so long since I did that it felt strange.

“Like really, man, you’ve got to go for the girl. Throw your pride away until you get her. Man, I haven’t seen you so worked up over a woman, so I guess you love her even though you don’t want to admit it just yet. Play the fool, land the girl, and get your mojo back. It’s not that hard now, is it.”

I stretched out my hand for a drink, and he looked at me, sighed, and placed his glass in my hands. “This is the last drink you need tonight, and I am driving you to my hotel myself.”

“Thanks, mate.” I sipped the drink, dropped the glass, and closed my eyes again while trying to figure out a plan to get Lucy and our baby back.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

LUCYEDWARDS

“Come on, sweetheart. It’s time to eat something.” Mom smiled as she walked into my room, carrying a food-filled tray. “I can’t remember the last time I saw you eat.” She kept the tray on the table, walked toward the bed, and sat while touching my cheeks gently, “How are you this morning, sweetheart?”

“Sore,” I sat up and wiped my eyes. “That smells so good. Is that what I think it is?”
