“Yeah.” Mom nodded as she turned toward the table, “Your favorite. I guess you don’t want it to be cold now, do you?”

Mom’s homemade brown sugar porridge. It was my absolute favorite, and the delightful aroma brought me back to my childhood.

“Of course not, it’s just....” I sighed and looked at my stomach, which was getting a little visible, and turned toward Mom. “I am so tired. Would you mind bringing the tray over to me?”

“Of course,” Mom replied excitedly as she brought the food from the table and placed it on the bed. “You know, when you were little, you never wanted me to feed you.” Mom arranged the spoons. “You always wanted to do things by yourself. You tried so much to impress your dad, so he could see you, not as just a sweet little girl, but as a fierce girl that didn’t want anybody’s help.”

I chuckled and shook my head, “Things change.”

She smiled and passed a spoonful of the porridge, “You like it?”

“Mmmmmm, yes, thank you, Mom.”

I was about to open my mouth to take another bite when the door opened, and Dad walked inside while looking around nervously.

Mom frowned, dropped the plate, and turned towards him. “What’s going on, honey?”

“The mayor just called me. He said he received a call from the government about the availability of the land where my farm is located.”

“What?” Mom exclaimed.

“I knew that man was lying through his teeth when he said he didn’t want to take over the land.”

“Mason can be anything, Dad, but he doesn’t lie,” I told him, looking between him and Mom.

“I think your opinion is irrelevant at this point. He has already proven his character to me; now you are sticking up for him. Lucy, how do you not see him for who he is? What makes you think he isn’t behind all of this? You were here when he said he would get back at me.”

“He knows he will make things more difficult for himself if he continues to rile you up.”

“Well, I googled him and found out who he is, born to a millionaire, pushed the business to a trillion-dollar empire, with access to almost all the governments of the world. Fuck, even banks get loans from him. He’s an astute businessman whom many financial experts say sees himself as a god because he’s so business-oriented, he can turn everything he touches into gold.”

“And?” Mom asked, her frown deepening.

“Don’t you get it?” Dad cried, moving closer to her. “People like that don’t take no for an answer.”

“We already told him no, and he left us.”

“He did? He leaves my house after I hit him, and two days later, the government wants to take over my land.”

Mom sighed, stood, and began to walk toward Dad. “Nobody wants to take over your land. You have all the papers, everything dating back to the founding fathers.”

“It won’t stop them from finding a loophole. Hell, they might find a way to bury something beneath it and say my farm is sitting atop a government-owned mineral or some shit.”

“That’s bullshit.”

“It’s not bullshit.” Dad exclaimed while grabbing Mom by the arms, “I am telling you, I have seen it done to someone.”

Mom put her hands on her waist. “Who?”

Dad scoffed, moved away, and waved her off, “Knowing the person isn’t the problem. The problem right now is how we must find a solution.”

“You go get the papers and give them to them,” Mom replied, sitting on the bed, and bringing the food up to continue feeding me.

“The papers are worthless. I am telling you, they will eventually find a way around it and squeeze that property out from my hold.”

“What if you give me a chance to talk to him?” I whispered, gazing at him.

“What else do you want, Lucy? Have you not done enough already?” Dad shouted, startling me.
