“Sounds like a perfect idea.”

“Well then, let’s get our stuff ready. I will call the pilot on the way so he can get the jet fired up.” Laughing, the two women began to make their way out of the room.

I am not certain how successful we will be in convincing Lucy to come back with us, but this is our only hope.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

LUCYEDWARDS

“Dad, all I want to do is just to talk with him.” I cried as I followed him, who was moving out of the kitchen where he was doing his repairs in the sitting room where Mom was cleaning.

“I already told you a billion times I am not letting you go there. In fact, the only time I allow you to walk out these doors is when you go to your uncle’s, or to appointments,” Dad countered as he dropped the tools on the table and began to remove his gloves.

“We must do this, Dad. There’s no way he won’t reconsider if I just talk to him.”

“You did talk to him the last time he was here, and where did that get us? He sent his henchman to come and threaten us. What else do you think you can say to him that will make him change his mind?” Dad asked as he checked the switches, ensuring they turned on fine.

“Mom,” I turned toward Mom, who acted as if she didn’t notice what was happening in the room. “Mom,” I called again before she turned towards me and sighed.

“I am too tired of your episodes with your father, Lucy,” she muttered as she returned to her cleaning.

“Can you just talk to him?”

Mom faced me. “What do you want me to say to him that he hasn’t already heard?”

“That I am an adult, and you cannot keep me here. Let me talk to Mason to reason with him, and ask why he is doing this to us.”

“I won’t beg, and no member of my family is going to beg anybody. All I know is they won’t have all I have worked my life for without a fight. I have notified my lawyer to get ready.”

I sighed in frustration, moved to the couch, and sat, “Come on, Dad. I know you are upset. Fine, be upset with me, but let me try to handle this. I really don’t think you want to fight someone who literally funds the government.”

Dad shook his head and returned to his work, “I don’t care. The judiciary is just, they will see reason with me, and soon they will realize that I am not someone they can toy with any time they want to.”

“Just one meeting with him, Dad, before it gets too late.”

“No.” Dad repeatedly said, “I won’t beg, I am waiting for him to come to my home and give me the documents, and we will fight this case until my last breath.”

I covered my face, praying the tears wouldn’t fall, too tired to continue crying. I raised my head to continue when a knock on the door stopped us.

I could feel Mom’s hands shake as she turned to look at us. “Why is he so early?”

“It might not be them,” I muttered.

“Are you expecting someone, honey?” Mom asked Dad, who was still staring at the door, confused.

“No.” he finally said while shaking his head. “To hell with this,” he muttered under his breath and began to walk hastily toward the door, his fist folded.

I grabbed a pillow and hugged it tightly as Dad opened the door. I saw his fist ease and his face soften as he stared at the unexpected visitors.

“I am sorry, this is Mr. Edwards home, right?” A very familiar voice said just outside the door.

“Ella,” I whispered as I stood from the couch nervously and approached the door while Dad turned to me, frowning.

“Who are you? Any what do you want?” Dad began frowning at her as I walked closer to him.

“Ella?” I called out to her, my voice loud enough for her to hear and bring her face inside to see me approaching the door.

“Lucy.” She cried out as she moved past Dad and made her way towards me with great delight, pulling me in a tight embrace that, even though initially uncomfortable, still thrilled me.
