“Not as much because there isn’t a huge variety of items and I know that place and where things are by memory.”

“And was it mixed?” asked Levi.

“Not that I could tell, but I haven’t been able to sit with Jessie and ensure I did everything right. I mean, I used to do the inventory, so I know what I’m doing, but it’s good to have another set of eyes, and she is a forensic accountant, so that makes it even better. Another thing is my uncle already knew I was questioning the numbers, and he tried to make it sound like I didn’t know what I was doing. When I said I was working with a forensic accountant to make sure things were accurate, he was not happy.”

Mark nodded. “Jessie is excited to do something since she is bored on bed rest.”

Callie looked confused. “So, is this linked to the first incident, or are they two separate things?”

Kaden shook his head. “Sharlee and I have been reviewing the videotape, and honestly, I don’t think it is a coincidence.”

“Right,” said Sharlee. “They are linked somehow, but are they linked because she stumbled into something fishy at her dad’s warehouse or because she overheard something that Ramirez said he doesn’t want to be repeated?”

“Or both,” said Callie.

“Or neither,” said Garrett.

“Agreed. You all know what to do. Track that phone call from this morning. Then find out who Ramirez might have been calling that day he was in the parking lot. Kaden and Sharlee are on the video, with details of both incidents. Bring me some scenarios or suspects or something.”

“Jac, I won’t answer the phones. Just let me stay in the office and work. Carter can bring me. I won’t drive in.”

Jac looked over at Carter and did the guy communication thing that Becky could not interpret, even after all these years.Carter squeezed her knee and then rubbed her thigh. Jac didn’t respond to her interruption.

“Mark, I need you and Carter to back each other up for Jessica and Rebecca. Backgrounds on everyone that might be involved with any of this and their close associates while keeping the women safe. If you need my house, use it. There are few—”

“Jac, wait,” said Becky. “I can’t put Jessie in any danger. She’s pregnant, for God’s sake. I’ll just do this alone.”

“No, you won’t, and if you interrupt me again, there will be consequences. Am I clear?”

“Cranky much? I’m just doing my job.”

Jac rubbed his face and then leaned close to hers. “Rebecca, we have a long history, and I love you like a sister, so if you think I won’t follow through just because Carter is here, you are operating under a false rainbow.”

Becky had been Jac’s only female employee on the team or frontlines for a few years before Sharlee or Jessie’s jobs existed in house, and she knew what consequences meant with this bunch. They had pretty much left her alone on that score but that had been because she was usually quietly working behind the lines. Jac waited for a moment, and then he went on.

“Garrett and Monroe, work out some possible scenarios and oversee the other teams. I’ll make some calls and work from a few angles I might be able to use. Right. Next meeting, tomorrow morning.” Jac started stacking his paperwork. “Oh, and Rebecca, you do not leave out of sight or sound of Mark or Carter until further notice.”

“I have work to do. I can’t just sit at home and do nothing.”

“Rebecca, if you need a spanking to settle, then that is between you and Carter, but I assure you that you will sit wherever Carter puts you, and you’ll not complain. We are not taking any unnecessary risks with you.”

“I never realized you were such a bully.” Becky crossed her arms, and several men grunted and coughed while looking anywhere but at Becky.

Sharlee smiled and spoke sotto voce. “It’s finally focused on you and not only me. Good luck.”

Becky shrugged and shared a small grin.

“Do you need some of my attention, my dear?” Jac asked Sharlee.

“Nope. I’m just fine with my current ration of attention. Thanks.” Becky giggled at Sharlee’s response.

“If that changes, youwilltell me.” Sharlee didn’t answer.

Jac turned back to Becky. “You can work from home if you want, and you can work on the inventory question with Jessie, think about other things that might have been missed the first hundred times you went back over them, and give us time to do our thing.”

Becky’s body language screamed, “No.” But what she did say was, “Fine.”

Jac raised his brow. “Excuse me?”
