Shaw let it go, asthe car lights were off and they were parked in the garage. “Come on. You needa drink. And I think I can find us more interesting scenery to appreciate.”

Three minuteslater Kaleb was accepting a tumbler of whiskey, his gaze travelling over thecity far below, a blanket of twinkling lights. “It’s a great view. You’vecreated your own little eyrie up here on the cliffside, haven’t you?” The firstswallow of whiskey warmed his gut, soothing his unsettled nerves in theprocess.

Shaw was pleasedhe got what she’d been trying to achieve here. Letting the silence envelop themfor a few minutes. Nothing but peace and a vast ocean of city lights toappreciate.

“That was… thatwas… fucking brutal.” Okay, he was ready to talk through his trauma now. “Therewere several moments when I didn’t think I’d be getting out of there alive.”

“Only several?”

“Your father isTore! Tore! The God of the Dawn Hunt.”

“Yes. But I justgenerally call him dad.”

“You could have warnedme. Given me a heads up.”

“Hah.” Shaw issueda scoffing husky laugh. “History says different. Every time I’ve tried to warnyou in the past you have blithely, with a swagger in your step no less, chosento ignore me. I just presumed you preferred surprises. Ta-dah, my father is aGod.”

“Too little toolate.” Kaleb knocked back a healthy swig of whiskey. “Tell me one thing. Howbig a collection of bones belonging to unacceptable boyfriends lie at thebottom of that ravine?”

“None. We’reValkyries, we don’t do boyfriends.”

“So… I’m the firstmale you’ve ever introduced to your parents?” A sparkling twinkle of smugnesssuddenly lit up Kaleb’s pale blue eyes.

“I don’t know whatyou’re gloating about. You wouldn’t go to a safehouse and I had dinner plans. Youtagging along was no big deal.”

“A-huh.” Kaleb’sbroad grin now had a tinge of smugness at the edges to match the twinkle in hiseyes.

“Why are youlooking like that? The facts are the facts.”

“I think youwanted me to meet your parents. I think you’re beginning to like me just alittle.”

“Oh, for Freyja’ssake. I knew I should have hog-tied and left you locked in the car.”

“Ah-hah! See, youconsidered not taking me, but you did it anyway. You think I’m special. Admitit.”

Rolling her eyes,Shaw shook her head. “I’m pretty sure you and I have completely differentdefinitions of the word, but sure, you’re special.”

The grin droppedfrom Kaleb’s face, and for once he looked serious, almost intent. “Did I pass?”

“Pass?”

“The test. Wasn’tthat what tonight was all about?”

Damn it, he wascanny. Shaw refusing to confirm or deny anything, taking a sip of whiskey tobuy herself some time.

For once in hisexistence Kaleb decided to be patient, wait. Refraining from filling thesilence with his dulcet tones. It was Shaw’s turn to tell him what was going onin that beautiful head of hers.

The only sound nowwas the rustle of greenery edging the perimeter of the deck, moving gently inthe cool evening breeze. Shaw fought the urge to shift in her seat or fidget. How did the Demon make his eyes sparkle brighter than the lights below? Andthat intense look? It made things liquify and heat up low in her body. Shit, was she really going… oh, yes, Shaw was already in motion. Placing her glassdown, getting up, swinging her leg over the Demon’s legs and sitting down onhis lap to face him. She waited for a moment, but still he didn’t say anything.Smart bloody Demon.

“I’ve had thisfantasy-”

“Yes.”

“You haven’t heardwhat it is yet.”

“Does it involveyou and me sans clothes? Out here? Banging our brains out?”

“Yes but-”
