My stomach sinks, and I fist my hands by my sides, looking away. But Blair doesn't stop until she makes a point of taunting me. "Like I said, tight."

When the boatdocks on the mainland, I step out and instantly scrunch up my nose at the smell. It smells like something rotten. What the hell?

"Smells differently, doesn't it, princess?" Sarah snips.

I'm about to step on the dock, but strong hands grip me by my waist and lift me in the air. "Be careful and stay close to me at all times," Killian cautions, placing me on the wood dock. I avert my eyes to look down the dark tunnel.Right.

"Got it."

His head tilts, gripping my chin softly with his fingers to turn my head back to him. "You alright?"

No, you just agreed to fuck your friends or girlfriend later tonight right in front of me.

"I'm fine," I chirp.

"Kill, come on. We're going to be late," Blair calls out, walking away.

"Let them wait," he snaps.

My head turns, and I see the hurt look in her eyes when she turns around.

She's in love with him. He probably feels the same, and I'm just a necessary evil in the way. I get it now.

"You have to get going."

He nods, and I follow him, understanding he could never be mine where it matters most.

We walk until we reach a sleek black classic gas-powered vehicle.Wow.

I smile as excitement runs through me. I've never been in one.

He opens the door and throws the bag in the back seat. I look over, and another vehicle is parked behind it on a deserted street. There is garbage and piles of metal everywhere.

I watch as Ciro opens the door, and Sarah and Sydney slide into the back seat of the second car.

Blair walks over to us and opens the door. She is about to sit in the front passenger seat, but Killian taps the roof of the car. She pauses halfway in the seat and she looks up. "Blair, go ride with Ciro."

"But?"

"I said, go ride with Ciro," he says in a stern tone.

She gets out and slams the car door, almost shoulder checking me as she stomps like a petulant child over to the other car. She opens the door with a harder force than necessary and glares at me before she slams the door.

I hear a string of curses coming from Killian, and he walks back around the car.

I already feel like I'm in the way and should have convinced him to let me stay on the island. "It's okay, Cross. I can ride with Ciro, and she can ride with you. It's really no trouble."

He opens the door harder than necessary and waits for me to slide in. "No."

Not wanting to make him more late than he is already to his event, I slide into the vintage muscle car, smiling to myself when I feel the leather and see the vintage gauges.

He leans inside and secures the seat belt over me; the heat and cologne coming off his body have me clenching my thighs together. He turns his head, his mask facing me. "Remember to stay close to me. Always."

"Always," I repeat with a smile.

He gets in the driver's side. My stomach somersaults in excitement when he places the car in first gear, and I hear the sound of the loud engine roaring and the tires screeching as it kisses the pavement, speeding down the road.
