"Do you take food or books?"

I need the digital currency for other stuff. Niro looks back and forth between me and the lady. He probably sees the worried look on my face.

"I can fix that?" He points.

He runs and fixes the lady's digital sign by resetting it, and it stops glitching.

I wonder how he figured that out at such a young age, but he does spend time with Ciro. It’s just a couple of buttons and a master reset.

The woman raises her brows and nods.

"He can have it."

I nod my head in relief. "Thank you."

"Any time."

We step out of the store he wanted to enter, and I gently pull him to the side by his arm. "You can't do that all the time, Niro. Someone could follow us. It will attract attention."

He lowers his eyes and frowns. "I was trying to help. I saw the look on your face. It was sad, and I figured you couldn't pay."

He's right. I couldn't pay it. I know he wanted the little droid, but he can't draw attention to us.

After the fifteen-minute walk back to the little room above the fortune teller I went to years ago that Ciro was able to secure for us since I left Killian, I look into the little fridge to see what I can make Niro to eat.

It's getting harder, but Ciro has provided us with meals from the runs he does with Kill. It's not easy, but he has managed to keep us hidden from everyone.

Killian thinks I'm dead.

"Hey." I hear Ciro come through the small door.

"Ciro!" Niro runs into Ciro's arms for a hug and their secret handshake.

He holds up a small box. "Look what I got you."

Niro tears into it while I shake my head. "Yes! My own tools! Look, Mom. I can fix things now."

"You're going to spoil him," I scold.

He shrugs, but I don't miss the look in his eyes. The look that tells me I mean more. The look I have to ignore.

"I got something for you." He pulls out a book from his pack and walks over.

I take it and look at the cover with my heart in my throat. "I heard it was your favorite."

I look away. "It was. A long time ago."

The Phantom of the Opera. I had a copy in my room at Killian's house, but I had to leave everything behind, and I didn't want to risk buying books here on the mainland in case Killian got wind someone was buying romance books from the only guy who could supply them.

"I was able to get a copy."

"How?"

He smiles. "I know a guy who knows a guy."

Meaning he made sure it couldn't be traced back to him.

"How did you know it was my favorite?"
