Kill was the best, but that was before, and this is now.

"You're going faster, and it's dangerous, Lillith."

"I've lived in danger all my life. A little motorcycle race going in circles hardly qualifies as dangerous." I lower my voice, clenching my teeth. "My own husband was counting down the months until I gave him an heir so he could kill me."

He whips around, making sure Niro can't hear what we are saying, causing me to retreat to the makeshift kitchen. "Don't you think I know that? Things are different with him now, but that doesn't change what you have to do. I wouldn't change it and would do it again. But you have to keep in mind that he will go back to the arena and race, Lillith." He steps closer, gently gripping me by the arms. "I'm trying to keep you safe. I love you, Lillith. You and Niro."

I avert my eyes because as much as I care about Ciro and all he is done for me and Niro, I don't love him that way. I know he’s trying to make it seem like he loves me as a friend, but I see it. Ciro loves me like a man deeply in love with a woman who doesn't belong to him. He's Killian's best friend, and I would never cross that line.

Dead or not, I'm Killian Cross's wife, and I have his son. That will never change. It's stupid to hold on, but I didn't leave Killian to find happiness with his best friend. I faked my death to give Niro and me a chance to live. My life and the ability to ever love another manwasthe sacrifice.

"I know, and it’s why you need to set up my next race. The bike’s energy cell was upgraded to go faster."

"And if he gets wind and decides to race?"

"Then I guess you’ll have to make sure he doesn't figure out who beats him," I tease.

"He will bring his A game, Lillith. This is how he tests the energy in things he builds off the grid."

I figured that was why Killian was so hell-bent on racing all the time. It was never for the money because it's obvious he has plenty of it. He would share his winnings with the guys in his crew, Ciro included. Now I understand why he won all the time. His bike was the fastest ever built off the main grid. Undetectable. There is also no way any network could track it.

"He may make the bikes faster with the cells he puts together, but I have skill. I know that track better than anyone."

"I get that, but still… if you push, he will push harder."

I move past him to put something together for Niro to eat the old-fashioned way, holding a pan and starting the burner. "That is if he decided to race. We both know he hasn't raced in five years, so there is that. There is no guarantee he will, but if he does, I'm ready for it. The money will be more than enough for a while, so it’s a win-win for mewhenI beat him." I change the subject, holding the pan in the air. "Hungry?" I wince at what remains of the food he’s able to get. It's not much, but it’s the least I can do for the gifts he brought Niro and me.

He glances at the few items I have spread out. "Why didn't you tell me you needed more food, Lillith?"

I grip the pan, hating he noticed. Niro is growing, and he gets hungry more often, and I won't deny him a meal. There are many times that I skip a meal to make sure he eats.

The food that is easily accessible is still grown in a lab. It's synthetic and isn't good for the human body, but they will never tell anyone that. The government just says that it's good for the planet and humanity.Shitty liars. That stuff has chemicals and hormones that cause unknown diseases to form when you least expect it. There is no way I'll feed Niro that stuff.

I turn around, placing the pan on the burner and hoping he’ll drop the issue. That is why I need to race. I hate depending on Ciro for things I can't get because I don't have untraceable money or the kind that is not linked to me. The only untraceable money is the digital kind won at the arena.

"Lillith." He calls my name.

"What?" I sigh, not glancing in his direction as I prepare the water to boil the vegetables.

"When was the last time you ate a decent meal?"

Three days ago, but I don't tell him that. Instead, I watch the bubbles form in the water of the pan in silence. Oil is not an option, so everything is cooked in the water Ciro gets me from the island.

"Move in with me, Lillith. You and Niro."

That has my head whipping around to face him. "I've told you no, Ciro. I have to do this on my own."

"You're so stubborn. He said that was your only flaw."

Blood rushes to my head every time Ciro reminds me of Killian. It's like a dagger stuck twisting inside my heart, causing me the pain I have tried these past years to hide.

I grab the vegetables with more force than necessary and drop them in the pan, hearing them bubble. The sound reminds me of the anger bubbling inside me.

"Funny he says that when the biggest flaw is what he planned on doing to his wife after she was of no use to him."

"I know, but I think that is his biggest regret, Lillith. Making you think he would go through with it."

I slam my hand on the small table, the sound causing Niro to look up from where he sits on the floor.
