He turns on the next street, looking up at the Utheans inside an aircraft hovering above us. "Do you like it? I had it delivered when I found out we had to attend the fundraiser. We have to blend in."

"It's…a lot."

It's beautiful. It looks powerful like the man driving it. He presses a couple of buttons, and then the screen pulls up different driving modes. He pulls the seat belt so that it’s tight across my body.

I turn my head, and he says, "Let's see what this baby can do."

"But the Utheans, they will detain you or give you a fine."

He chuckles. "I could afford it, and besides, I can erase the feed."

The car lunges forward, and I smile at the rush of adrenaline. My stomach somersaults, and I let out a laugh. The buildings rush by in a stream of lights as the car eats up the road.

A huge bright light shines above us, illuminating the interior of the car. "Excessive speed! Stop the vehicle!" The Uthean's voice thunders through the streets, following us above.

He takes a sharp right, and the tires kiss the pavement in a loud screech.

"Hold on, baby."

I close my eyes. "Just don't kill us."

"Says the one riding across the finish line on one wheel."

"I beat you fair and square."

He snorts. "I let you win, Pyralis."

"We'll see…won't we, Kill?"

He slows down and pulls out a device. His fingers fly across the screen. "Exit the vehicle!" The spotlight illuminates the entire car on the side of the road.

"We're screwed, aren't we?"

"One second," he says, looking at the screen.

"Feed detected." A female voice responds to whatever he is inputting. "Purging now."

I glance up and watch through the panoramic roof. The light shuts off, basking us in darkness. The red light from the Uthean's laser turns green, indicating no infraction or imminent threat, and hovers past us. "Show-off."

"Did you think I would get us caught or, worse, endanger you?"

"Would you?"

Silence blankets us for a few minutes. There are times I want to tell him how he makes me feel. How the butterfly wings flap inside my ribs when I feel his gaze on me or when he's near, or how the touch of his skin ignites a booming fire within me hoping I don't go down in flames.

"I would have jumped after you in the ocean even if I didn't think I could save you. The answer to your question, Lillith, is no. I could never. You can rest easy at night knowing you’re safe with me."

He drives the car forward until we reach a tall skyscraper. "That is good to know." I smooth the skirt over my thighs. "I can finally get some sleep."

My door swings open. "You can come to our bed, and I promise you, I'll rock you to sleep and keep you safe."

A warm chill runs down my spine, awakening a burning need between my thighs I thought I would never feel again.

"Mr. and Mrs. Cross," a man who looks like he would be my father's age welcomes us at the entrance when Killian makes his way to my side.

Killian stands next to me but doesn't greet the man in return. He has brown eyes and is wearing a nude-colored suit. He glances at me like a reptile looking for prey, wondering if what he sees is edible.

We are ushered into a room full of vintage and digital art for auction. It reminds me of the first time I met Killian and didn't know who he was. I calculated that day to the time of his accident, and it was before.
