Goose bumps rise on my neck when I glance around the room. All eyes are upon us like I predicted. Women give me intriguing looks, and the men admire what they see.

My hand slides, gripping Killian's arm. "Let me know if you see anything you like."

I smile. "You remembered."

He remembered when I was engrossed in the painting all those years ago. It was the only thing interesting in the room until he appeared.

"Of course. I remember everything about you."

"Lillith." I turn, and my chest squeezes at my father's voice.

"Father."

He glances up at Killian with a woman I don't recognize on his arm. He never brings Gretel to these things because she doesn't fit in with her looks.

"Mr. Sinclair, what a surprise."

"I could say the same. I didn’t think you still came to these things. You were always the silent donor."

"I guess when you have married a beautiful woman, it would be a shame to keep her hidden from society." Killian lowers his voice. "You didn't think I would eat her alive, did you?"

Well played. So this is why he wanted to come.

My father looks back and forth between Killian and me with a tight smile.

"Where's Gretel?" I ask in contempt. "I thought you brought her to these things." I look at the woman with red hair and alabaster skin on his arm. She’s not my father's type. She must be well connected or someone's wife he plans on fucking later.

"She's at home."

Interesting. I guess she is off the menu tonight and was sent to bed early. Some things never change.

"Oh, how unfortunate."

"How's married life?" my father asks with a sly grin.

He thinks I'm being tortured because, in his eyes, he married me off to a monster.

"It's wonderful. I have no complaints," I rush out before Killian can answer. "How's business?"

Bastard. Two can play this game.

My father visibly stiffens and is probably relieved when his friend Nicholas walks up. "Killian Cross," Nicholas says with an insinuating grin, then slides his gaze over me, not hiding the fact he's fucking me with his eyes. My father smiles.Pig.

"Nicholas, I see that your eyes are trying to get acquainted with my wife," Killian says in a lethal tone.

Nicholas raises his brows in surprise because he’s probably never been called out before. My father chuckles, and so does the woman on his arm, but Killian isn’t laughing. He’s serious. A chill skates up my arms, feeling Killian's anger.

My father smiles at me. "What did you feed him, Lillith? He's losing his mind already."

"I can assure you my mind is not lost, and your daughter feeds me quite well." He pulls me close to his side, snaking his hand protectively around my waist. "I make sure to return the favor."

My father grins when Nicholas excuses himself, murmuring under his breath.

"It's been a while, Lillith. I haven't seen you around the island."

I don't miss his tone or the fear snaking around my spine. The way my father's eyes have a vacuous emptiness when he speaks to me. He's one of them, and I'm a defector in his eyes. He knows I'm loyal to Killian. He sees the way I allow Killian to touch me. The way I embrace it.

The woman smiles. The curve of her red lips lifts when she says, "They're in love."
