"What's up with you and Evelyn?" Ezekiel asks.

"What about her?" I say, confused.

"I heard you brought her to meet your parents Thursday night?"

Xavier looks straight at me. I can tell by his expression that he is pissed. "Elena was there Thursday watching movies with your mom," Ezekiel says.

"Yeah, we kinda walked in on them watching a movie." Xavier's face tightens. "I wasn't thinking," I say.

"No, you weren't," Niko says, tossing his napkin after wiping his mouth, "that is fucked up. It's why she is avoiding all of us."

"Damn, ese," Xavior says, disappointed, "I know you don't want Elena but don't hurt her."

"I think he already did," Niko says, "It's why she hasn't been to any of our games lately. My guess is she won't be coming at all." He gets up and looks at me. "Like I said, you got what you wanted, but I agree with Xavier. You shouldn't have hurt her."

"What is it? Shit on Santiago Thursday," I sigh thickly, "Look…. I'll talk to her tonight when she comes over. I'll apologize. There is nothing between me and Evelyn. It was fucked up bringing her there." I look at Xavier. "My bad,Hermano."

"I'm not telling you to profess your undying love for my sister." He gets up. "But don't disrespect her. Don't disrespect our family."

I walk into my house and enter the living room and frown when I see the living room empty. I walk over to the brown basket near the chenille sofa and find it empty. I look around, and it's gone. Elena's favorite blanket with the sugar skulls is gone. The little black hair tie isn't in the metal vase.

"Hey, Santi," My mom greets me from the kitchen.

"Hey, mom." I look at the dark TV screen and then at her. "It's Thursday."

"Yeah."

I look around. "Isn't it movie night with Elena?"

Her lips form a thin line. "We are taking a break," she says but doesn't look at me.

"Break?" I ask confused. "After five years?"

What break? Elena and my mom don't take breaks for their movie nights.

"I know. Time flies when you think about it. She has a lot of homework and needs to study." She looks up. "I'm sure you wouldn't like her around when you have a girlfriend. It must have been an award for you and Evelyn. She seems really nice."

Nice means she doesn't approve. She doesn't like Evelyn. I don't like Evelyn. The guys were right. I fucked up. I hurt Elena. She won't even look at me.

"Mom…it was a mistake bringing Evelyn over to meet you. I wasn't thinking. I…''

She smiles. "You don't have to apologize, eh. I'm sorry. I played matchmaker with Khalani. We had hoped you two would be together one day. But it wasn't fair, and I'm sorry for putting that on you both. I know you don't like Elena like that.

"I…"

"It's okay, Santi. Everyone knows, and so does Elena," she says too quickly.

Something tightens in my chest. "Everyone knows what?"

"That you don't love Elena––not like that." She walks up to me, and I swallow past the lump in my throat when she caresses my face with her hand, looking crestfallen.

My mother is hurting for Elena, and it guts me. I love my mother and would hate for me to cause her pain. She loved movie nights with Elena. She sees Elena as her daughter, and I took that away from her because I'm a selfish prick who can't handle Elena's love for me.

"I'm going to talk to her. I need to tell her I'm sorry and that she can come over whenever she wants."

"No," she says grimly.

"No?" I ask, dumbfounded.
