"Hey, Maxim," the waiter says coyly. "I haven't seen you in a while."
"I've been busy," he says.
I look between them, and my small assumption about Maxim liking me washes away.
She gives me her back, holding the serving tray under her arm. I find it rude but say nothing. I caught her sayingsomething about high school. I'm sure they dated, so I blocked out their conversation.He's not my boyfriend, and this is not a date. He's Santi's brother, and I'm here to handle business for our family.
After five minutes, I glance at the cold pizza and push my chair back. "Excuse me, I'll be right back," I say, "I need to go to the restroom."
A soulless pause follows.
The waitress looks over her shoulder. "Oh, I'm sorry," she says, but I can tell she isn't by the look in her eye. She's jealous. "I'm so rude. My name is Marie, by the way. I saw Maxim, and I had to come over and say hi. We used to date in high school."
Wanting to leave, I give her a fake smile and ignore Maxim. "You two catch up. I'll be right back."
I find the sign to the restroom, go around the tables, and reach the hallway. I glance back, and Marie is seated in my chair, yapping away, but Maxim is looking right at me with the same blank expression he always gives me.
I tear my gaze from his, noting the door to the back exit, and turn left inside the women's restroom, relieved that the door doesn't squeak. I find an open stall, click the door shut, and pull out my phone.
I decide to text Xena. She has bodyguards because of her parents' agreement with Niko's father to keep Xena safe, which means she has drivers on hand.
Elena: What are you up to?
Xena: I'm home, bored out of my mind and wanting to strangle Niko. He's in his room watching porn loud enough so I can hear it from my room.
I stifle a giggle.
Elena: Can you pick me up?
Xena: Where are you? Are you okay?
Elena: I'm fine. I need a ride so I can pick up my car.
Xena: Where?
I text her the address.
Xena: I'm on my way.
Elena: Back exit. Tell me when you get here so I can go outside.
After fifteen minutes, I sigh in relief when she texts me. Marie must be talking Maxim’s ear off, or he doesn't care that I've been in the bathroom for a long time.
Xena: I'm here.
After leaving the stall, I closed my eyes and opened the door to look down the hallway. When I make sure no one can see me, I push the door for the exit, running to the black escalade in the rain.
"Who are you running away from?" She asks when I shut the door.
My heart is beating. Adrenaline running through my veins. I shiver when the cold air blankets my wet skin and close the air vents.
"No one." I glance at the two bodyguards seated up front, but they are staring straight ahead. The car makes a right turn.
Xena, the noisy pain in my ass, spots Maxim's car. “Wait… is that…” She looks at me and smiles. "Running from the big bad wolf, eh."
I glare at her. "I'm not running." But she smiles, noticing the faint blush blooming on my cheeks.
"That is who you've been spending time with." She laughs, shaking her head slowly. "I don't blame you. He is fine as fuck. I bet he knows how to eat pussy."
