"Business meetings."

He lets out a laugh. "Oh… I see how it is. Business meetings, huh?"

I giggle and he slides his hand up my thigh under the hem of my shorts. "I like it when you wear shorts, but when we are alone, I would love to see you in a thong." My smile falls. My insecurities fucking with my head. He pulls back with a frown. "Did I say something wrong?"

I shake my head, my chin dips, and look at his hand on my thigh. "No, it's just…I didn't think…"

"That I wouldn't find you beautiful because of your scars?"

I nod slowly, but he lifts my chin. "Get that thought out of your mind right now. You're the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on. I meant it when I said it, and I'm flattered you let me touch you. That you shared something personal with me." He kisses me lightly across the lips. "That you're here with me," he says softly. "I love the way you blush when I touch your soft skin. A couple of scars could never chase me away."

"There are more than a couple."

"They are part of you, and I know you have stopped, and I hope it's because of me. Because of our time together"––he slides my hair behind my ear––"I'll do anything to take that pain away if you let me. You can cutmeif you want."

A laugh escapes my throat, and I realize tears have fallen down my cheeks. "I couldn't."

"I've done worse."

I know he has. I'm not stupid. He is not an Uber driver, and I'm sure he's killed like the rest of the Kings, if not more.

"I hope they were all bad."

"Life and death. Not because I wanted to. It was the only option. But I'm serious, Elena. If you're feeling down, sad, hurt or depressed. You call me, and I'll come over and get you.

I nod. "I haven't…lately."

He smirks. "I know. I saw, and I checked with my tongue." I blush. "There she is."

He wipes the tears from my face with the bottom part of his t-shirt. "You're going to get makeup…"

"Good, it will look like I was getting hot and heaving in my low rider. But you never answered me about Friday night. I want to spend time with you... alone and not at a restaurant where I'm at risk and where some girl from my past messes with my timewith you because it is all I look forward to. I promise, Elena, it will be perfect."

He waits, and my grin widens. "Yes, Maxim. I would love to go on a date with you, but that night, you made it perfect."

He kissed me for the first time. He went after me, and he made it right.

After class, I head to the guy's house off campus. My brother should be there with the guys, getting ready for the game. I spot all the guy's cars in the driveway.

When I walk inside, Santi, Niko and Ezekiel play Madden on PS5. The massive TV almost takes up the entire wall.

The game pauses when they see me. "Hey, Elena," Niko is the first to greet me, followed by Ezekiel.

Santi gets up from the recliner. "Hey, is everything okay?"

"Yeah, I was hoping to catch Xavier."

I can see the flash of disappointment, but it quickly disappears. He looks over at the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. A brunette I've seen around when the guy's race walks toward the front door.

"Bye, Xavier," she calls out.

I arch a brow when she gives me a fake smile as she walks out. I turn to face Santi and roll my eyes. "Really?"

He shrugs. I look around Santi at Niko and Ezekiel. "We tried to talk him out of it, but he needs it before a game," Niko says.

"What's wrong? His hand is broken."

"It's not the same," Santi says.
