“Why didn’t you call me?”

The man sighed. “Because I’m an illegal and I didn’t want my wife to lose her husband and her daughter on the same day.”

Jordan sighed and shook his head. “Has anyone else been inside it?”

“No, just me,” he said. “My brothers refused, but I wanted to take something of theirs since they took my daughter.”

Jordan walked to the door and gazed at the vehicle. Pulling out his cell phone, he called his assistant. “Robin. I have a job for you first thing this morning. I’ve been up all night. I have a vehicle I need someone to check for fingerprints. Top priority. In fact, I want the results when I come in this afternoon. Now I’m going home and going to bed. And tow this vehicle to the lot.”

“Yes, sir,” she said. “Get some rest.”

He glanced at the people standing around in the room gazing at him. “No one is going to be deported. But you’ve got to work with me if you want us to find your daughter. Now tell me where you found the car.”

The man sighed. “It was parked at the edge of town, in a ditch. There was no one near it. They were long gone.”

The mother started weeping again. God, how he hated these types of cases.

“We’ve been up all night. We’re going to get some rest, and then this afternoon, we’ll be back working on this case. In the meantime, Camila sent your daughter’s photo to all the local law enforcement groups and she’s put her on the national child abduction list. We’re doing everything we can to find her.”

The man nodded as he wrapped his arms around his wife. “Thank you.”

“Talk to you later this afternoon,” Ely said as the three of them walked out the door.

When they were in the truck, Camila sighed. “Something told me we needed to come back by here. I’m so glad we did.”

“Yes, but it would have been better if he had not driven the vehicle. We could have searched the area around it and maybe even gotten a tire print.”

“True, but I’m just glad we came by again,” Camila said. “Maybe we’ll find a fingerprint, but I bet it’s been wiped clean.”

Unfortunately, he couldn’t help but agree with her.

CHAPTER7

Ely woke late the next day. They had gotten very little sleep, but at least he’d had enough to have a clear brain. Camila had slept in the guest room, and if he had any say, that wouldn’t happen again tonight. But first, he had to convince Jordan that they had found a treasure.

Stepping out of the shower, he toweled off and began to shave.

Jordan walked into the bedroom, fully dressed and ready to go.

“We need to pick up Camila’s car,” he said. “She’s going to need her clothes. She’s in the shower now. I thought the two of us could get her things and bring her car back here.”

Ely glanced at his friend. “I think we’ve found our woman.”

Jordan shook his head. “You’re always in a rush to find our woman. She’s a marshal and I think we’re her suspects as much as anyone else in town.”

He’d considered that and he turned frowning. “No. We’re the law. We’re the good guys.”

“Then why in the hell didn’t we know about these missing children? We should have recognized there was a problem a long time ago. Fifteen kids have been snatched in our area in the last two years. When we get to the office, I’m going to research to see if there are any more.”

The number was horribly high and Ely wondered why they didn’t know. “Do you think the law in those other towns are a part of this?”

“I don’t know, but I’m certain Camila thinks we may be part of the problem. We’ve got to prove to her that we’re good, honest, lawmen who are not dumb as a box of rocks and knew nothing about the other children,” Jordan sighed. “I’m not so certain I don’t believe us, so I don’t know why she’s going to think we’re the good guys.”

Ely stared at his friend. He’d been wanting to find a woman and settle down for quite some time and he’d even considered leaving Blessing to locate a woman. At least one who was interested in him, but he would rather continue the tradition of his family and have one woman between him and Jordan. Both of their families had lived this way and it was what he knew.

If he was going to stay in Blessing, they needed to do everything they could to convince Camila she was their woman.

“We need to show her our way of life. To convince her that she’d be perfect for us,” he said. “I’m tired of waiting.”
