Could she do it and also hide her badge?

With a sigh, she reached in and turned out every pocket but the one that held her badge. As they watched, she tried to slip the badge up her sleeve, but the gold star fell to the ground.

“Son of a bitch, she’s a U.S. Marshal,” Carlos said.

The older man sighed. “What in the hell are you doing here?”

“Fifteen missing children over the last two years. Twenty-five over the last twenty years. Plus numerous flights to Mexico where three people leave and only two return.”

Jim White’s face blanched as he stood from behind his desk and walked to her. “It’s a free country. If I want to fly my employees to Mexico to see their family, I can.”

“But you’re not flying your employees. You’re flying abducted children. You have one in your whelping shed as you call it right now.”

The man grinned and it was one of the most evil smiles she’d ever seen.

“Darling, you’re right. And we have a shipment going to Mexico tomorrow. Where we’re headed, they’ve been looking for a newputato join their operation. You’ll fetch a very hefty sum.”

A chill spread through her and the men grabbed her arms so she couldn’t fight back.

“The law knows about you. If you harm a federal agent, it will only be worse for you,” she said. “Think about it. Twenty years in jail.”

He laughed. “Darling, if they catch me, I’ll be spending the rest of my life in jail and it won’t matter. Put her in the whelping shed with that brat and then we’re leaving tonight. Now.”

“Yes, sir,” the two men said and they hauled her out the door.

Dragging her feet, she fought them as much as she could. She would not be going down without a fight.

“And give her a shot of that xylazine. We don’t need her fighting us on the plane,” he said. “Dammit to hell. Why now?”

If they gave her a shot, she would not be able to fight them and that frightened her more than anything. She needed her senses about her to save herself and Marta. Once they were in the air, they would be lost forever.

When they reached the shed, the burly cowboy pulled out a ring of keys and unlocked the door. “Shit. If the feds are closing in, we’re in trouble.”

“I could get you a deal,” she said. “You turn over evidence and you’ll do less time. If you’re caught, you’re going to spend the rest of your life in prison where I’m sure someone will look at you and say, that’s a fine handsome man. I’m going to make him my bitch.”

A shudder went through the man. “Shut up.”

“Scott, I don’t like the sound of this,” Carlos said. “I mean we get paid well, but I don’t want to go to prison.”

“Shut up,” the man said as he opened the door. Stepping inside, he lifted a door in the ground that went down to a cellar.

She heard the child crying.

“It’s okay, Marta,” she told the child. “The feds are on their way.”

Of course, she was lying, but she wanted this child to feel like there was hope and she wanted to put the fear of God into these men.

“Scott, did you hear that?”

As they tugged her down the stairs, the smell of damp earth reached her nose. She hated storm cellars. Her grandmother had one that they went into whenever there was a storm when she was a child. It was a scary place.

Right now, she was dealing with a huge storm.

“Fix the shot,” he told Carlos.

The scared man gazed at her and she smiled at him.

“You’re going to do so well in prison. You’re younger than the other guy and the prisoners hate anyone who mistreats a child. You’ll soon be singing soprano and being someone’s bitch. I could get you a deal.”
