“Shut up,” Scott said. “Don’t listen to her.”

The man’s eyes widened and she almost wanted to laugh, but she’d rather have been able to reach her gun that she’d stuffed in her boot. But she hadn’t gotten the chance and in this small space, she was afraid to use the weapon for fear the bullet would ricochet and hit the little girl who looked terrified.

The man’s hands shook as he filled the vial with xylazine, a drug for horses that acted like a tranquilizer for people. He spilled some of the liquid.

“Watch what you’re doing,” the man said.

“Don’t worry, Marta, the police are on their way. We should be home by suppertime,” she said.

“I want to go home,” the little girl said.

“I know you do. And we will be going soon,” she said.

“You’re lying,” the older man said.

She turned and laughed at him. “No, I’m not. Last chance for a deal.”

Carlos came at her with the needle and she fought him. Part of the needle went into her arm before she was able to yank it out.

Already she could feel herself becoming dizzy as he pushed the vial of liquid into her.

“We got enough of it in her. We’ll give her some more before we take off,” she heard the man say.

Suddenly she could feel herself falling to the floor.

“Have a good sleep. Rest up, princess, because soon you’re going to be very busy. I’m sure you’ll be the most popularputain the house.”

She heard the door slam down and the men laughing as they walked away.

“Lady, it’s going to be okay,” the little girl said as Camila felt the medicine overcoming her. If only she’d told Jordan and Ely about her plans. But no one was coming. No one, unless her emergency trigger had worked. And she wasn’t certain she’d hit the right button.

“Marta, phone,” she struggled to say, but it sounded more likemom. Damn, not now.

CHAPTER15

“Did you try to reach Camila again?” he asked Ely as the truck sped toward Jim White’s ranch. Why had he not thought to check the FAA or even Jim White?

Everyone in town knew he had money and believed he made it selling cattle, but he had other ways of making money, and as much as Jordan was trying not to believe it was true that he was behind the abductions, it made sense.

And he was doing it right here under their noses. Damn him.

“Call dispatch and ask for backup from a neighboring county,” he said.

“Yes, sir,” Ely said.

The witness sat in the back quietly watching them and he could see the tension on her face. How would she react when they reached the ranch?

Maybe he was wrong to bring her, but he wanted to see Jim’s reaction to her. He wanted to see how she reacted to Jim.

“As soon as we get back to the office, we’ll get your family on the Zoom call. I’m sure you’re anxious to speak to them,” he said, glancing back at her.

“Yes,” she said. “It’s been so long. They were what kept me going.”

Regardless, if Jim White was not the abductor, they had to find whoever was doing this.

Pulling into the lane to Jim’s ranch, he glanced around. An eerie tingle traveled up his spine.

“Is that Camila’s car?”
