“What the hell?” Jordan said. “What is she doing here? I thought she was in San Antonio.”

He put the vehicle in park and they climbed out of the truck. When Jordan opened the door for Kaitlyn, she stepped out, and he could see her body begin to shake.

“That building over there is where they kept me drugged and hidden until we flew to Mexico,” she said quietly. “Didn’t you say there was a child missing? I bet she’s in there.”

The big man himself walked outside. “Sheriff, what brings you out to my ranch?”

Automatically he’d stepped in front of Kaitlyn to protect her. Why he didn’t know, but he felt this instinctive urge to keep her from any additional harm.

A whimper came from behind him.

“Just a minute,” he said quietly. “Backup should be here any second.”

Ely stepped toward the man. Three big burly cowboys walked out from behind the barn and approached Ely.

He held up a photo of Kaitlyn when she was a child. “Do you happen to know anything about this child who went missing over twenty years ago?”

The man had the nerve to laugh. “Ely, I don’t remember what happened last week, let alone twenty years ago.”

The three stooges who stood near him chuckled like he’d just said a funny joke, but this was no laughing matter. And already Jordan could feel his body tensing.

“Well, maybe seeing her in person will help you remember.”

Kaitlyn stepped from behind Jordan. Her body was taut, her fists were clenched. “I remember everything about being abducted by your men. You kept me in that shed over there until you flew me to Mexico and sold me to a brothel. You stole my childhood from me.”

The woman took a step toward him. “You made me into a whore.”

She took another step and Jordan watched the man’s face. He just stared at her, his face expressionless. The man had no soul, no empathy for her. He couldn’t care less.

“How many other kids have you done this to? Why would you do this? So that you can make a lot of money by making us into slaves in the sex trade? Have you no conscience, no remorse? Or are you just so damn greedy you don’t care?”

“Lady, you’re crazy,” he said. “We’re done talking. I’m going in and calling my attorney and tell him to file a restraining order for you to stay away from me.”

Kaitlyn laughed. “Don’t worry, you’re not going to need it.”

With disbelief, Jordan watched her pull a gun from a pocket in her dress.

“I’ve been saving this bullet for you for a long time,” she said. “It has your name on it. You’re going to die.”

“Kaitlyn, no. Drop the gun, now,” Jordan cried. Why hadn’t he done a pat down? “You don’t want to spend the rest of your life in prison because of this man. Believe me, when we convict him, prison will be much worse for him than the quick death you’re offering him.”

A sob escaped from her. “You don’t know what it was like to be terrified in that hell hole. You don’t know what it was like to be a little kid who was forced to have sex with strangers. You don’t know what it was like to be expected to service the most disgusting men. My life is forever scarred because of you.”

She raised the gun and Jordan was forced to tackle her. The sound of the gun going off terrified him.

Pinning her arms behind her, she sobbed and Jordan hated this case even more.

“Everyone stand back and remain calm. Don’t make me pull the trigger,” Ely said.

When Jordan stood, he pulled Kaitlyn up from the ground and slapped a pair of handcuffs on her.

It was then that he noticed a red stain of blood on Jim White’s thigh.

“Arrest that bitch, she tried to kill me,” he said.

Ely pulled his radio out. “Send out an ambulance to Jim White’s ranch.”

Just then the sheriff from the next county over pulled up and jumped out of his car.
